Thank you so much i was scared i would kill them upon seperation. Expecially since i had no idea where to start. They arent very big so the roots shouldent be to to hard to seperate. When i do fertalize is there something you recomend? I am reading citrus have pest problems is there a general pest control product?

Separating them may kill one or both but keeping them together may very well give the same result. The chances of having two healthy trees are greater if you separate them now.

I, and it seems that most people on this forum, use Foliage Pro 9-3-6 (FP) which is a fertilizer that contains all of the nutrients that citrus trees require. Each time you have to water, add FP to the water and use that instead of just water. Use 2 1/2 teaspoon FP/gal of water. Get a cheap pH testing kit - the kind used to test the pH of swimming pool or aquarium water. If your tap water is above pH 6.5, add enough vinegar to adjust it to about pH 6.5. You will only have to add give or take 1 Tb/gal. So, you
will be watering with a mix of vinegar and Foliage Pro every time the tree
needs water.

My version of Al Tapla's 5-1-1 Mix

· 5 parts pine bark mulch (remove ½” pieces through 1/2 inch screen)

(Some people use Repti Bark instead of mulch. They do not screen it. Get it on Amazon.) Be sure to soak the bark overnight.

· 1 part sphagnum peat

· 1 part course perlite (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0055F49P2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

· 1 Tb garden lime /gal 5-1-1 mix (measure the 5-1-1 mix)

· Osmocote plus (follow manufacturer’s instructions). This is optional.

· Moisten well and wait at 2 days before using, if possible.

Definitely separate them! I had to do this recently. It may help to dunk them in a bucket of water to loosen the dirt. I'd put them in 5-1-1 and in the shade for a couple of weeks while they recover. Good luck!!

Thanks, i just made my 5-1-1 today. So i moistened it and am going to repot tomarrow I found some pine bark that didnt need sifting. Was it hard to get the roots untangeled? And how would i know how deep to pot it?

I dunk in a bucket but also use a spray from a hose.

The bark you want is 'pine bark fines' but most places don't seem to use that term. I get mine at home depot and it is called 'soil conditioner'. It is smaller than the standard stuff used for mulch.

You can use a regular potting mix, but you have to be careful not to overwater, especially during winter. The 5-1-1 mix is more forgiving in that respect. And pretty cheap :)

Agreed....use a bucket and spray if necessary. As Susanne said, plant them as deeply as they were before. You should be able to tell from the trunk. It is scary, I know, but if you don't do it, one or both will eventually die. I separated mine this summer and they are both fine. Make sure after you replant them, you put them in a more shaded location and water perhaps a bit more frequently at first than regularly. I found my limequat suffered the most and became limp more quickly than the meyer. I watered it more. It is blooming now. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Thanks for your help. The bucket of water made it so much easier. I didnt see many lost roots. I seperated them about 2 pm today. They meyer lemon had waaay more roots than the key lime. And so far my meyer lemon seems to be doing ok. My key limes leafs have already curled under. And is already looking kind of rough and it hasent been 12 hrs. I put both of them in the shade. We will see tomarrow im a little scared fir my lime. Thanks for all your help.
