Timing tulips to bloom in May (zone 9)

I live in Sacramento (zone 9). I am trying to time my tulips to be ready around May to catch Mother's Day and May weddings. Last year I planted my tulips in January (after being chilled for several weeks) and they began blooming around the beginning of March with one of my late varieties blooming into April. I was wondering if it would be worth it to plant my tulips later, say in late February or March. Has anyone had luck with this? Sometimes we can have random warm days in May and I am worried the heat may have a negative effect on the tulips. Thank you in advance for the help!
