Pears are notorious vertical growers, some varieties are even more prone to than others. Very little you can do that will provide for long term "spreading growth". Remove limbs growing towards the interior and always prune to an outside lying bud.

I have worked for years trying to prune my pear trees for a wider form. Sometimes I have had success and other times no matter what pruning I do the branch still wants to grow vertical.

I finally gave up and let the tree do its thing. As long it is bearing pears heavily I have learned to accept the shape.

You can force it t a spreading shape as follows:

Pick the branches that you wish were growing out and tie a weight to the end of that branch. The branch will bend depending on how much weight you put on it.

By next year the branch will harden off and once it gets "woody" it will retain the new shape.

I find 16 ounce soda bottles seem to work great on young trees because it is very easy to regulate the weight by putting more or less water in the bottle.

Any additional new branches that grow can either be pruned off or allowed to grow out until they are at a proper height/length to weigh down with more bottles.
