Some beds need a box spring - some don't.
Sounds like yours may be the latter.

I also have a plantation bed and I use the box spring. I have found that standard bedside tables are too short but console tables, round tables, etc work perfectly. Even looking at this picture the table you can see does not appear to be a standard bedside table but rather a small dresser, console table, hallway table.

bachelor chest works best. i have a drexal heritage rice bed that we acquired at an estate sell. I paired it with two bachelor chest in the same 18th century line from another furniture company. Looks like it was made for the bed. Hope this helps.
