Living room layout

Hello, My wife and I just purchased a center hall colonial. It is 2500 SF 4b2.5ba. When you walk in the front door, there is a dining room to the left with the kitchen and breakfast area behind that. To the right is a family room and a living room behind that, separated by a wall. The stairs are straight in front of you.

We don't necessarily like the wall between the two, but are unsure if we want to take on having it removed at this time. So for now, we have a 3 and 1.5 year old and are using the first room as their play room and the second room as our living area with TV in there. We have moved our furniture around 10 times without any success. We are in need of new furniture, but do not want to purchase any until we are happy with a layout because we don't know if we should purchase a couch and a couple chairs, a sectional or chaise couch and a couple chairs, two couches, etc. We have looked at Houzz extensively but noone seems to have our layout. Most people have an opening to this rectangular room from the long wall but we have two openings on the short wall and a fireplace opposite that. I am attaching a photo line drawing to help.

Any advice as to how you would lay out this room would be very helpful before the expense of new furniture.

Thank you so much.
