OK, this is weird. I just posted this in the Soil, Compost thread, and now it's everywhere.

I have not heard of this stuff but here is the web page on it.

Mainly you want to find out what else might be in it besides paper fiber. The Specifications tab shows this:

"The raw materials used to produce Ram Board are a blend of
100% recycled fibers, including OCC [old corrugated containers, i.e. recycled cardboard], ply fibers [probably from manufacture of plywood], fiber scrap, mixed fiber waste, and reinforcers."

One may wonder what 'reinforcers' are. Possibly some type of binder or glue. It also says this:

"Ram Board is 100% recycled/recyclable and can help contribute toward LEED points."

I'm getting the impression it is pretty similar to corrugated cardboard, without the corrugations. The binders and glues in corrugated cardboard are actually made from wood resins and are biodegradable.

I would not hesitate to use this as mulch or for composting. Of course, actual recycling might be better, if you have facilities available, but if you need some mulch or browns for the compost, by all means.

Thanks, crusader; that's pretty much what I had figured, but I am grateful for another set of eyes on this. It's really amazing stuff, and useful in lots of ways for working around the place.

Thanks too. I have a large area I want to use cardboard under the mulch and am thinking this will be much more efficient than saving cardboard boxes.

I've used ram board with mulch on top in the past and it works great. The big benefit for me is that it stays flat much better than thicker repurposed cardboard boxes. If you can source used ram board from a neighborhood construction project it's as green as repurposing boxes.
