Are these chairs the answer ??

I still have a lack of seating in my FR, and wonder if I may finally have found the answer. I have debated for years about adding another chair opposite my Bergere chair on the right side of my fireplace wall below, or getting more substantial ones to flank the TV cabinet. Another Bergere would block the entrance to the LR on the left, which wouldn't be terrible, but it would be too crowded then to have two chairs either side of the TV cabinet. So it's one or the other; a pair of chairs flanking the cabinet, or another chair in front of the left bookcase to balance the bergere I already have.

The chairs on either side of the cabinet in this photo are the ones I am considering. Another look below:

I would likely change the fabric, but first I need to decide if I want to use these chairs.

Here is what I have in place now:

The new chairs seem so big compared to the older ones, I'm afraid things may start looking too crowded. What I want to achieve is to provide some comfortable seating for our entire family when we gather for holidays, etc. The current chairs look nice but are not comfortable. In order to get a comfortable chair I think I may need something bigger with an upholstered back, which is why I thought the new chairs might work. I know the prints on the wall may need to go or at least be moved up a bit if I go with the new ones.

The fabric I'm considering, if I use the new chairs, is this:

Would love your thoughts, thank you!

The new chairs look like dining rooms chairs…so, “no” to using those.

Old chairs look like dining room host/hostess, as well.

How about a picture of the sofa with the Bergere and the other flanking chair.

Your leather ottoman…right of the bat, I would eliminate. It is too heavy looking and taking up too much room.

Are you married to the (Karastan?) rug?

Hi Judy, and thank you for your thoughts. The rug and the ottoman are both staying put. I see your point about the chairs looking like dining chairs, and I'm sure that's what they are. I see lots of dining chairs used in other rooms for similar purposes; occasional seating, and sometimes just as a decorative accent. These chairs would be used at family holidays or when we have a large group over. The wall opposite the tv has a large couch and two comfortable chairs flanking the sofa; one o them the betgere chair in the photo. I was hoping these chairs might balance the visual weight on the right side of the room. It's all about the tv, as far as how the seating is now.

I will post more photos of the room later tonight so you can get a better picture of it.

I like the new chairs and I like your fabric. Are you sure they are comfortable? We all have that problem of enough seating for company but yet not make our living space look like a doctor's waiting room with seating lined up around the room. I think they are just "there" and not in the way and you don't have to drag dining room chairs in to seat people. They can be pulled up to be in the conversation group and then pushed back when company leaves.

Hi Martha :) Yes, the new chairs (possible) are very comfortable; surprisingly so. And yes, the chairs currently in place now were refugees from an old dining room set. They got dragged in the room quite a bit and just ended up staying there!

its a fine line when looking for extra seating. I don't want the "waiting room" look either....

I like your plan. And I do like the new fabric. I say go for it!

And if gatherings are anything like they used to be in my home, I will bet you use that ottoman as seating as well

I'm not 100% sure that the fabric you have in mind will marry well with the flowery rug. Of course plaids and flowery patterns can be used together, but the herringbone pattern and material seem a little too masculine for that carpet.

I think a picture of the sofa is important. It looks large and both of your occasional chairs do not balance into the scheme. Small photos next to t v should go.

I see high back wing chairs...

judy, here is a photo of the sofa. This room has been set up primarily as a TV watching area, but it also doubles as our primary family gathering spot. Hence, the seating all faces the TV.

What a beautiful room! Such pretty windows. Your new chairs look very comfortable, and the neutral fabric will coordinate well with the other upholstery. I always treat oriental rugs as neutrals. Turn your new chairs just a tad to the fireplace, and you have a winner! Good job in finding comfortable seating for guests.

Your family room is one of my favorites. So warm and inviting. I love the new chairs, they do look more comfortable that the previous chairs. I also love the prints beside the TV. I would not change a thing.

I would get rid of the chairs flanking the tv and add a chair to the other side of the fireplace

Louis, that's really the decision I have. I'm beginning to think the chairs flanking the cabinet would work, especially with some updated fabric. Now that I have a viable option in that direction I need to decide if I want to go there. One thing at a time, always.....

Thanks for your input. If this were a self contained room I would not hesitate to do what you are suggesting. Before we opened up this room to the adjoining LR, we had two wing chairs on either side of the FP. It looked great, but the room was so dark we decided to open up the wall leading to the LR, and, as is so often the case with more open floor plans, the furniture arrangement got trickier.

I upholstered 2 chairs with a similar shape.

Well, I like the chairs and even the fabric on them. So what if they are dining room chairs - they fit the space and the use you have for them. I do not think that the new fabric goes with the rest of your pieces though. The rest of the room is warm and rich; the new fabric is too light weight, imo.

That looks like a lot of chairs to have unless you need them daily? I would like to see another chair flanking the fireplace.

Ratherbe, if you did those chairs yourself you are very talented! They look great arranged in a corner like that.

power muffin, I think the photo of the fabric is deceiving. Under the flash the color looks icy, but IRL it is a warm shade of tan/gold. Blends very well with the wall color. My only concern about it is that my rug veers toward pinkish/salmon tones, but only in the center of the rug, and not on the border, where the chairs would sit. I know I shouldn't let this influence me, but the fabric was a closeout; Cowtan and Tout, at an amazing price. But.....for fabric freaks like me that is a hard fact to ignore! Even if I don't end up using these chairs I will likely keep the fabric and find a good use for it.

kitch, you expressed what I have been wondering about, and when I first put the new chairs in, it seemed like a lot of chairs in one space to me, too. If I ditch this idea, I would add one more substantial chair in place of the two flanking the cabinet. I may just put them in the room for awhile and live with them. One of the reasons I love this forum so much is that change is always hard for me and it takes me awhile to get used to something. It's rare that I love something new right off the bat, so I often don't trust my first reactions.

    Thanks again, all.
