I agree. All the sumacs we have here on our place sucker and form groves, which is great if they pop up somewhere you're willing to allow them to stay....but not so great if they are in a place you intend to grow something else you like. We let them stay wherever they pop up on the creek banks or the sides of the steep part of the bar ditch because suckering plants like that are great for erosion control. In the civilized landscape around the house? Nope. We get rid of them quickly before they can start to spread. In the garden, triple nope, or they'll take over the whole garden. I think they are lovely when they bloom, and I love the dark red flower heads/seed heads in late summer and autumn, but I don't love them enough to let them invade in places where we don't want them.

Ack! We don't have those alianthus down here in our part of the state, but if I found one, I'd yank it out too. I think they are common in areas that have better soil and rainfall than we have down here. This thing makes me appreciate our plain old weedly sumac even more because at least it isn't alianthus. It is pretty, but since it is so invasive, it does need to go, Nancy.

If it's not sumac it may be a sprout from a tree called Bird of Paradise. If there is one close by the sprouts will pop up every where and are a nuance.

Dorothy, I've never seen them here and hope never to see them here. I didn't know that was their nickname, so thanks for sharing that with us. What a horrible smell they must have.
