Without seeing what the rest of your house & yard look like my first thought is to lay a stone path curving towards the deck gate in the back. I would landscape both sides of the path & add a vertical plant or small tree to the right of the gate. I'd add foundation plants also to soften the look. This could all be done in stages.

I'd like to see how this area relates to the front entrance. Is that the entrance on the deck?

This is a view from the deck looking out to the front yard. The area connects from our driveway to the side entrance to the deck (there's another deck entrance at the back to the back yard). The front door is to the right when looking at the deck. I'd like to make it feel semi-private/ look more interesting.

You could use a decorative pebble to fill around some concrete pavers, or pick up some pieces of natural flagstone to make the path. Not sure what your budget is, but making the whole thing into a flagstone patio (just dry set in sand) wouldn't be too expensive and would mean you could use the area for a number of uses. DG or decomposed granite is another very cheap/easy way to go for a versatile, uniform surface. Best of luck!
