Selections on the right , and if you really must do color on walls, I think you'd be surprised how a pale blue would tie the yellowish floors,brown cabinets and gray with some yellowish in the counter all together.

I like the one on the left, its more dramatic.

To me, the fusion on the right doesnt have the beautiful swirls that make this granite so attractive.

I dint like either with your cabinets. You need a neutral painted cabinet with your other choices.

Sorry Anglophilia, not everyone needs to have bland counters like you seem to prefer. This is now the third or fourth thread where you insisted that counters with movement are a no go. That however is only YOUR personal opinion.

To the OP, both work well and will be quite beautiful. Just make sure you choose a quiet backsplash. I can see a beautiful grayed turquoise color for your walls with the slab on the right..

We were going to use the same stone for counter and backsplash. Mostly because we thought it'd be to hard to match one more thing in with all of this. To much?

My personal preference would be the left, darker one, but I agree that the one on the right(the lighter one) will tie better with your flooring. Try also to put samples perpendicular to cabinets, or their door samples, to see them as they'll be installed, if you haven't yet.

you can always tie things together even more by choosing hardware..say, silver toned hardware will work well in the case of the lighter, cooler slab.

On making it backsplash too..depends on configuration of your kitchen I guess.

I vote for the slab on the right. I think that it is beautiful and works with the floor, cabs, and sink. It also gives you more options for backsplash and paint. I would not use it for backsplash.

If you do use the slab material for the backsplash it will integrate more with the cabs, imo. In that case I'd be happy with the left hand choice. With proper undercab and overhead work area lighting levels it could be beautiful and dramatic.

I really like the counter on the right but I would not use it for the backsplash too. I would use something neutral but not white subway tile.

I love the gold choice and think it would be quite striking

So for those saying if we went with the one on the right not to use it for back spash too can I ask why? We have a smaller L (~7x9 ft) shaped kitchen so I don't think it would be too much and I'm leaning (slightly) towards the one in the right.

I agree with some of the others, both would work well, but I love the one on the right as it seems to pick of your cabinetry colors and IMO would compliment them beautifully.

go ahead and use it for backsplash-the kitchen is small-even if it is a bit striking, in such a small area it isn't going to jump at you that much...might be better/easier than trying for another material-that can wreck havoc in such a small space. You already have 3 differing things-floor cabs and counter, and you may go for a color to the walls[I would do a neutral]...just use the piece for backsplash. it'll be good.

chartist, ALL our replies are OUR opinions, including yours that believe that everyone must make their home so it is possible to "age in place". They are just that - opinions. But the OP asked for our opinion and I gave mine.

I personally, and as a design professional, think that many of today's kitchens are far too busy - way too many things in them with lots of movement. If the owner of the kitchen is happy, terrific! But I advise against it as one is more likely to tire of the dramatic than they are something more neutral.

I prefer a soothing, quiet kitchen. I want my excitement in the food!

I had a busy, dramatic kitchen for 6 years and never tired of it. It made me happy every single time I walked into it. (The granite was Typhoon Bordeaux, one of the most busy granites.) Look, I even had a busy backsplash with the granite. (Even the wallpaper in the dining room had a subtle pattern on it.)

And that is fine. Lots of people feel as you do, but please don't demand that others also put together a soothing kitchen, especially when they express excitement for a granite with movement.

To the OP, I like the idea of using the granite for the backsplash too.

we probably all have our definition of "busy"..to me your previous kitchen is quite soothing cpartist..the granite is actually great (ours in previous condo, I disliked. not to the point of ripping it out-the thought never even crossed my mind to tell the truth-but yours is much more noble looking, imo)

I guess my "busy" is if the elements don't work together well in a space, or make me dizzy. I love patterns; yet some are vertigo-inducing. say ones that mimic 3-D s..Well there must be people who love them precisely for this effect.

Update: Just got home from the yard. The one on the right is way darker than it looks in this picture. It's more dark grey with yellow than gold with dark teal-grey. The one on the right is actually a bit lighter than pictured. A third stone (azurite granite) briefly entered into the choice but we decided it didn't work with the sink. So we're going with the one on the left! Counter and backsplash. We're doing under the cabinet lighting too. Thanks for your help everyone!
