Cold hardy fast growing vine for balcony?

last modified: 9 years ago

Hi everyone!

I live in Ontario Canada (zone 6a) and would like to add a bit of greenery on my east facing balcony located on the 3rd floor of my house. It would be in an insulated container in order to 'survive' our cold winters. Im looking for a vine that would spread quite easily, as I would like to use it for privacy as well, and it would need to be strong enough to endure 3 story wind.

My neighbours have silver lace vines that are growing unbelievably fast, and I was thinking perhaps to take a cutting to transplant, but I would prefer a vine that doesn't produce flowers as I am EXTREMELY scared of bees.. and you know... flowers attract bees.. I also looked into evergreen shrub types but my mind automatically links the look of it with Christmas and the holidays, so I don't think it would bring the right atmosphere in a summer setup, which is the only period that I will be enjoying this location :)

So anyone would know of a fast growing non-flowering vine that is cold hardy to zone 6a and somewhat wind tolerant, with morning direct sunlight?

I know I'm asking for a lot haha, but who knows, maybe someone out here would have a suggestion :) Thanks so much in advance!

Marie
