HELP! WHAT DO I DO NOW??

Just moved into this Florida home three weeks ago. Brought the chair with us from our previous house, but got a new TV console and sectional. The problem is that the sectional looked a LOT darker in the store than it does in my home. It actually looks blue/grey in my home and it's clashing terribly. Now note, the rugs on the floor are for my aging dog......I will order an 8 x 10 area rug when I decide on how to fix this. Also the walls are not painted the color we picked yet.....still debating on that too. Called the store and basically they said return it for a fee or exchange it for another sectional. The store is SMALL and has nothing else that will work in my space. Can I keep this sectional and work in the color somehow? Will it look better with paint and accessories? HELP!!!

If you are going to get a new rug, perhaps try for one that has both colours in the design to tie everything together.

I see what you mean about the sofa being lighter -- it's definitely not a dark gray -- but I think it's a beautiful color. Had you gone darker, the fabric would likely have shown every little speck of lint that landed on it. I think what you have is a happy medium between dark and light, and with the right wall color, rug, and accessories, your room will be gorgeous.

What is it clashing with? I don't doubt you, but I can't tell from the photos.

Since you're going with new paint and rugs, I think you'll be okay. Everything else seems pretty neutral as far as I can tell.

It reads a bit like denim to me?,,

can't see well the color of your tile. Would you call it pinky-beige, or not?

in any case. the current wall color doesn't help and i believe it contributes to that feeling of clashing.

    I'd either:

-borrow this slight blue grayish color from the sectional, probably in lighter version. but will make the tile to seem more pink, if it has pink(does it? monitors are all different). yet it's a nice way to make that blue blending and belonging. then you can add accents, art, etc that will have some blue/gray in it too..and some pink(?) and cream and beige..to balance it out.

-borrow that warmer pinky-ish(?) cream from the tile so the walls will blend with it more. consequently, the sectional will read bluer:) but everything will harmonize more overall, as in first suggestion too, or so I believe

-pick up something like a warm tan, to go both better with flooring AND with the sectional. your rug, chair, credenza-they all hint on it like a good choice. then you go for accessories that bring even more interest..pillows throws and ceramics are the best since they contain patterns. and almost every combo of colors can be found in them. also: curtains.

I like this third way the best myself as I think

In any case..doesn't look like a catastrophe to me. You expected something else, so to you must look much worse than it probably is. Yet I believe you can make it work much easier than you think. Unless you hate it so much it starts being silly and counterproductive to work with and around it.

Oh phew I feel better!! I think the butter yellow walls are throwing me off! Thank you for the reassurance!! These are what I had in mind for rugs......thoughts???

I am pretty picky about color and I don't see anything wrong in your picture. Which things do you think are clashing?

I think a rug that looks more natural would work better with your tile and sectional and be more "Florida". A jute or sisal would be pretty, if you like that look.

You could add pattern with your pillows.

My tile has no pink tones whatsoever......just creams, browns and a little white....very textured. Maybe I should think more of a brownish rug?

    ah, then it's much easier

pink in tile can be beautiful but is more demanding

my monitor's been playing tricks on me

you can go many directions with rug. maybe pick the function first..should it be hand knotted wool? inside-outside rug? natural like jute or seagrass or sisal? polyester?

narrow it to the material that'd work best for your needs..then go from there.

i definitely like the brown one that you have now, for example

The brown rug is an indoor/outdoor rug I got mainly for my aging dog.....he's sliding terribly on these tile floors.

Someone asked about my chair....it's actually a piece from Ethan Allen and has an ottoman. I was trying to keep it and planning on painting the feet dark brown. Yay or Nay???

Also what color paint on walls?? Tans, Grey's, Taupes?????

Yes, do paint the feet! I'm sure they can just be removed and taken out for a good paint job.

In this photo, it looks like the sofa is just watching while the floor and walls fight it out. I'm not good at picking out colors but I'm going to take a chance and say "not yellow". :)

(I have what looks like the same color yellow on my walls. I like yellow! Not here.)

That was a lucky mistake as it looks so beautiful in the room and I have the perfect color for the walls. My friend has gray and beige furniture, printed rug and this color paint. It blends everything together so well. Since them I've recommended it twice and both people love it. BM smokey taupe

    ..taupe

but then i'm very partial to taupe. it's one of my favorite colors

it works very well with blues and browns and beiges and..I can go on and on, really

my favorite -that I can name, the taupe I have in one of the rooms now is custom mixed-is Kangaroo by Benjamin Moore. it's a darker color than what Yayagal posted, but not too dark. mid range.

I have a sample can of BM Smokey Taupe!!!! One the front runners!!!

Thank you everyone!! You are all such a great help!!

I think the sectional is great, too, and I agree, that the wall color change will make a big difference. We had our home office yellow, and yellows are hard colors to work with because they can be very bright when put on the wall. Love the idea of a taupe there.

Also, get a pillow or throw that you can drape over the chair that brings the eventual room colors together.

Your yellow walls are reading as a very light spring green on my monitor, and the color is not doing your sectional any favors. (It also isn't pairing well with the floor.)

I like the sectional a lot, and absolutely there is a wall color that will make it look good. The current color is definitely not it.

I'd be careful choosing a gray rug. Just be sure it works with the sectional. Warm grays don't necessarily work with cool grays, and some grays lean toward green, which don't think would work well. Lots of rugs come in different sizes, so if you can, bring home a small version of the rug you want to try out before committing to the large version. It's much cheaper and easier to return the small ones if they don't work out.

I think a beige that harmonizes with the floor would be nice on the walls.

The walls are a very light butter cream......and I'm sure that's what's throwing my color senses off. There are a few creamy beiges we are looking at as well. Can't wait to get some paint on the walls and pull this room together!!

My3Dogs......I have 6 boxes of accessories that I plan on filling the room with once I get the paint on the walls......cozy throw's included!

If it was up to me, I would highlight that beautiful sectional, very pretty bluish shade and buy a rug with blue/gray and a little tan, brown just enough to bring it all together and compliment the tile floor and I would paint the walls a light shade of the same blue tone as in the rug. Here are 2 rugs with those colors in them.

And BTW I live in FL. 37 yrs. now and we like cool softer colors such as your new sectional, for me no browns, taupe's or dark grays. Left all the dark warm shades behind in the cold ne yrs. ago.

I think we have the same sectional but mine is a dark brown. I have always had light colored furniture so I was worried about it showing dirt. It does not at all. It's a year old, and I have a 6 yo and a very messy DH. At least this dark color which resemble less a dark leather works.

Aputernut......out of all the colors in the rainbow, blue is my least favorite color with yellow close behind.....so this sectional is throwing me off big time. I LOVE warm and cozy colors.....Autumnal colors even. So I'm hoping this blue/grey sectional is the ONLY blue thing in my house. :)

Iowacommute......the sectional looked almost smokey grey in the store, which is what I was after. Imagine my surprise when it looked blue in my home!

Accessible beige (SW) is a nice crisp color that works well with many colors. If you can find a paint color that works well with your floors, everything else will fall into place.

Your sectional and tiles are beautiful and the natural rug you have looks perfect with it. I also like the second rug you show, the brownish one. I personally would paint the walls cream, one that has no yellowish tones in it. If you can find a color that exactly matches your nice tiles or is just one tone lighter I think that would be a beautiful but neutral background to all your furnishings and accessories. You can repeat the color of your couch in wall art, ceramics etc. so that it blends in more. Once you've found the right wall color I think everything else will fall into place.

Thank you d-gw and ingrid......I also have a can of Accessible Beige.....probably the front runner. And I agree about the wall color. I know what I'm doing this weekend!
