Photo Wall Advice?

I want to create a photo wall in part of my hallway which is longish but not very wide and quite dark. I want to use B&W photos with frames in either black or a variety of black/greys/white frames. What would be the best way to display/hang the frames for best effect. What spacing works best between each frame? Also my partner has just re-plastered and painted the wall and is not so keen on my banging nails in it to hang photos. So I was also playing around with the idea of a "frame within a frame"- so a large ornate frame with the photos hung inside the frame thus minimising damage to the wall. Thoughts??

Fix the lighting situation first. No point in doing any of that if you can't see it.

It's only dark when the lights are off (ie with natural light) as there are only windows at the end of the hall. It's ok when the lights are switched on.

No, it's not adequate for an art focal wall. Fix that first. Track lighting is good for that. And train yourself to always use the lights. If you can do that, then placing art in the hall is the third step. No point in any effort if you won't use the lights to see the effort.

I've seen artists and curators come up with some clever ways to hang their pieces over the years. One way to completely avoid banging holes in the way altogether is to consider using a rack with very shallow depth (like a bakers rack, if there's room), and tabletop frames rather than wall frames. Then you'll also have an easier fix for the lighting situation if you decide you need it a bit brighter, with clamp lights on the shelves. You'll have your own mini gallery setup in your hallway!
