Try some pots of greenery or flowers if it gets enough sun. They will make a huge difference.

I agree with everything Melissa said. If the area doesn't get enough sun, add shade plants/flowers. I think that's what the space is missing.

Also, you can liven up the "sofa" (and even the chairs) with some colorful pillows.

You might add a small rolling cart for serving snacks and use a colorful pitcher-and-tumblers set when serving family and friends. From the set, choose one or two accent colors to repeat in throws, pillows, and/or flowering plants and flower pots.
