Diving pool or a play pool?

We have three kids (4, 7 & 8) and are considering having a pool built and we're debating which type of pool would be a better fit: a diving pool or a play pool. Cost is obviously a factor since a diving pool would be more expensive but is the difference in cost worth it?

Any thoughts??

I would build a diving type pool. It does not mean it requires a diving board, it just means it meets the requirements as a diving type pool based on the depth and the floor dimensions. An structural engineer will produce a detail on this aspect.

Most kids will want to dive so keep it as a safe as possible. Be sure the builder follows the structural detail to the letter.

Not too many builders or even homeowner's want a diving board because of liability issues, but the diving board does keep the kids corralled in the deep section where it's safest to dive.

    Adult supervision is paramount.

We went back and forth over the same decision. Originally I wanted a dive-depth pool, because to me that's what a "pool" is. But after several rounds of discussions, we thought long-term and went with a sport pool. Water depth at each end is about 4', going to about 6' deep in the middle.

"Long term" meant "kids out of the house". For long term, I simply wanted a pool in which I could swim laps. I didn't need dive depth for laps. I installed turn tiles on the end walls of the pool and turn "T"s on the floor for flip turns.

The pool got daily use when the kids were young and at home. We never missed the diving aspect of it, even in their teen years. The 4-6-4 depth made it easy to play catch, volleyball, basketball, or to simply horse around.

The kids' and their friends preferred our pool to another friend's dive pool because of the easier depth. There's more than one shallow end, there's room to play, there's room for horsing around, there's room to hide from the action.

Less water depth = less water volume; easier to clean, less chemical expense...though I'd say that's a weak point to argue.

Consider functionality, consider practicality, and go with what will work best for you. Either way you sort of lose something. If it's a tie, think of what kind of pool you'd want for your own personal use after your kids are out of the house. They do grow up quickly...

I put a pool in when I was pregnant with my oldest now ten year old and in the beginning the deep end scared me, but honestly until the kids are five the whole pool is deep to them and a drowning concern anyway. But now with ten year olds girls here all the time the cartwheels off the side would be deadly without the deep end. Kids will dive no matter what after a certain age make sure it is into a safe deep end when they do and believe me they will!
