Yes - a rug would help enormously - I'd go for a pale colour !

One large piece of art would anchor the sofa, and smaller pieces can be arranged on other walls. I locate the frames on the walls as opposed to the furniture, and let furniture rearrange itself without having to move wall art.

Try to bring your furniture into the room more, so that seating pieces relate to each other. Yes to a large area rug, as well as side tables, lamps and a larger coffee table, if possible. Your drapes could stand to be higher, and doubled. If I am seeing a door behind the sectional, I suggest you arrange seating so that the sectional faces the mantel, and chairs flank. so the walkway goes behind, rather than through. You could use one round bit on right side of mantel (decorative plate?), and one horizontal bit in front. If art seems overwhelming, look to oversized photography, or constellation maps for the wall. Your space is quite lovely.

I do think it needs some color, it's rather monochrome, which is what I'm guessing is making you feel bored with it. You have a nice neutral base, a few pieces of art, some coordinating pillows, lighting details...it will help bring the room to life.

It's a great room. I would flip the sectional to where the chairs are and put the two chairs in front of the windows. From the kitchen you will see part of the back of the couch. This will close in the living room a little and make it a more distinct and cozy space.

I'm not a decorator - but I am a fellow Canadian so here goes! I'd switch the chairs and the couch - the couch on the solid wall and the chairs in front of the windows - side table between chairs. Look at Winners, Home Sense, Walmart etc for large colorful art to put over the couch - a set of 3 - or a collage of colorful pictures - large to fill the space. Check selectrugs.com for a great selection of rugs at affordable prices - they are a Canadian company and ship for free. I would stay neutral in color but with some texture - also Home Depot has some great rugs. I would also take the stuff off the mantle and maybe find something smaller with some color - you seem to like plants, maybe something green in colorful pots?? You've got a great blue bottle on the window sill - maybe that with other glass in different colors?

I would move the furniture first, then get the art work - take the accent colors out of the art work. Add a few things in whatever color you choose to the kitchen sill, maybe a table runner - I think you have cushions in a red or orange - good choice with the walls and stuff. Anyway, good luck and put another picture up if you make some changes!

I think you could add an oriental/ Persian rug - I think that deep red colour would go beautifully and add a bit of colour to that gorgeous dark wood

This home's great room layout would work nicely in your home. I also vote for a light /midtone rug and a sofa table behind the sectional near the dining table. Book shelves next to the fireplace. it seems you could tuck a cozy coffee sipping chair in the corner by the sliding door with a cute table and plant. Beautiful home!

An area rug with a rust colour would be lovely. I'd move to sectional to face the fireplace and place the chairs each on an angle on either side of the fireplace, so they face the sectional. Or put the chairs both in front of the window. It's a bit difficult to see how much space you actually have there.

I agree with many of the comments. I suggest moving the two occasional chairs in front of the window and moving the sectional against the large wall. I would have a few large, dramatic, pieces for decorative accents. Color theme can be on of the accent colors in the chairs. Either one very large or two pieces of artwork on the large wall. Define the spaces with area rugs; one for the living area and a complimentary rug under the dining table. A statement piece for a cocktail table would be great. Remember --- less is more. I might also suggest choosing the artwork first. I found the selection of area rugs is far greater than the selection of artwork.

Second remember -- "theme". Just because you like it, doesn't mean it works!

You have a beautiful room with great lighting and inviting furniture. I like some of the suggestions and would start with the ones you can test out such as room accessories. Think of one or two colors you love. Maybe red and turquoise. Find a rug that has one or both, some throw-pillows and a light blanket, a vase or small sculpture that have one or both colors. Add them to the room and see how you feel. If you like it, you can add more. At this point look for the large piece of art that has the colors in it. Watch for art festivals this summer and have fun. Make memories while collecting. Putting your room together once you have the color ideas will be like a treasure hunt. Hope to see some photos of ideas you try out.

Like the idea of bookcases on each side of the fireplace, but another option is a large plant in the corner. Set an "up light" on the floor and you will have terrific shadows thru the foliage.

2 or more pieces rather than one large one will shake things up a bit.i cannot tell the colour of your chairs but a few toss cushions here or there in co ordinating prints are budget friendly and add colour and interest. you can even buy the foam and stitch together a couple of covers yourself. it is very easy!!

I would add some well planned splashes of colour to your home. I'd first decide on a colour scheme and accent with it. Some gorgeous cushions, a central wall decor & a rug would look lovely. Since there is a lot of gorgeous dark wood in the room, I would stay away from more wooden additions - such as wooden framed wall hangings. I would balance out the lovely wooden look with more soft fabric accents.

There's a lot of brown on brown, which is not providing the energy you want. But a few accessories will quickly adjust the color balance. I'd start with a rug - definitely something light and/or bright. Find a coordinating piece of art + a few throw pillows and you're mostly there. As for wall art, I've had decent luck finding big canvases at Home Goods, though you do have to be patient and keep checking. You might consider recovering your dining chairs - they look like they have brown fabric as well. Make your curtain decision towards the end - it will be easier once these other items are in place.

you have a lot of beautiful dark floors. I would keep my windows free of covering and go with reflective wall deco, either mirror or metal where possible, add some color with flowering plants, art and pillows, and add a couple of indoor trees with clear fairy lights on them, and put a beautiful sheepskin or flotaki area rug.

I like PaintColourHelp's idea of recovering the wooden dining table chairs. All in all the rich brown hues and the cream/offwhite hues are gorgeous and warm... Just choose soft accents to blend in some warm rich colour and softness in to the space. That is, if you are looking for a more vibrant look and energy....

Definitely move the sectional so the chaise is against the wall where chairs are now, and back is to the kitchen. Chairs could either flank the firelplace, back to the window where sofa is or be in the corner to left of fireplace with a table between, all anchored by a rug and then some art on the large wall and maybe a table behind the back of sofa.

A pop wall! Either paint an accent wall or add the accent wall by utilizing some modern wallpaper. Try an choose a color that will compliment a rug and throw pillows! Good luck the room already looks wonderful, these minor suggestions will spruce up the room in a big way with low cost.

A large mirror across from the window will reflect the light outdoors, regardless of how you arrange the furniture. You can put smaller artwork on either side of the mirror. A colorful rug will also help, and bookshelves on either side of the fireplace will give you a way to personalize the space.

The white ceiling is much too harsh for the color of your flooring. I love the wall color, so maybe go with a muted (NOT bright) pale shade of yellow or cream on the ceiling?

I'm in agreement with everyone else -- you do need to switch the chairs and the sectional around.

I hate rugs myself (I'm a dog owner). Your floor is so pretty.....you could swing it without a rug.

You do need HUGE artwork on that main wall, preferably with dim lighting shining on it from the ceiling. If you move the sectional on that wall, maybe find a large circular piece of artwork (maybe something metal) and put 2 wall chandeliers on either side of it.

If you can't afford nice built-ins on either side of the fireplace, you need very tall plants on one or both sides. Maybe a tall plant on one side with a table with a tall vase with tall narrow arrangement in it on the other side.

You do need to remove the tall things off your mantle. Just lay some greenery on the mantle and let it hang off the sides.

Rugs, Wall Hangings, Books and eye catching sculpture would make great additions to the room.

love the rug! i would still switch the furniture so the couch faces the window and the chairs obscure less of it if they are the window side. coffee "table" looks great and personally I love your tall candlesticks on the mantle.

I don't think I can move the sofa. Because the chaise would have to be on the long wall and the long part out in the open. The entrance to the room is on the long wall and I think it would be too awkward. I probably should have thought it out more before buying the sectional.

No, I think the chairs need to go in front of the window and the sofa on the wall with big art above it. The issue is the chaise on the sectional - they always are the problem. You probably need a simple straight sofa, not a sectional in this area.

Any chance you can have an upholsterer change the end the chaise is on? Maybe they could even cut the chaise end so that the base would be able to go on either end and you would just transfer the long cushion depending on which end of the sofa you place the base. It doesn't seem that it would be too difficult. I have seen sofas that actually come this way so that you can change the orientation of the chaise end easily.

Built in book cases on the sides of the fireplace would be fantastic! A light rug and artwork above the sofa would tie everything in. Beautiful space!

I agree on the bookcases flanking the FP, what you've done so far is great. If you want to keep semi-monotone, get a large grey/beige black/white mural or photo for behind the chairs.. ZGallerie has some trendy art. Then add some textures w pillows..silk, mohair, fake fur...and some bling to break up the expanse of brown.

I think the tan or olive would work for your room.

I would use an area rug similar to the one below from Overstock.com ... An 8 x 10 runs a couple of hundred dollars ..the sides of the fireplace could have 2 trees as pictured below...9' trees from overstock.com. Add wrapped canvas to wall to the right of the room for color.

Thanks for the great comments. For the art above the chairs I think I want 2 or 3 large pieces. I would like pops of color. I like lime green and yellow. I do not like red. Open to any other colors. Any help is appreciated.

Basic, simple artwork would compliment the interior without overwhelming the environment.

Love wall color. Panels on window change to a shade darker than walls. Add built in bookcases in white floor to ceiling on either side of firepl. Add baskets and fire log half way dn. plants and a few books above. Area rug. Take color from walls as base and colors from chairs as print. Over firepl a big sunburst mirror.add area rug under table 8 x10 same colors as living but don't match. 8 x10 for living rm too.

Sorry didnt see TV. Teals and peacock colors are good. Could go peacock blue on panels. Lowes and Bed n bat has them in satin fabric. Would add color and life to room. Maybe float sec facing TV put chairs by window. Big round ottoman for coffee table in a teal.

kam995, where did you end up getting your rug? My living room looks very similar to yours (dark hardwood floors, sectional, etc). I did buy a rug from target.com about a year age in the same light tone, but it's not holding up that well (due to 2 kids, husband and a dog!). I love the design on the rug you chose. thanks!
