I've never tried rooting a cutting as it is a suckering shrub and very easy to propagate just by removing any exterior shoots. Just make sure you get ones with some good root development. Otherwise, I would assume you would have similar success using the same methods you would do for your other cuttings.

What gardengal said. I will add that in my area it's rather slow growing so division vs rooting a cutting would make more sense.

I'd be interested in knowing which species you are growing and wanting to propagate. There are around 3 or maybe 4 species that do OK here. I have never tried growing them from cuttings either, but I have offsets. You would think since they are related to boxwood, they might be fairly easy to start from cuttings.

DaveinNoVa, I know ? wasnt directed at me but I'm sharing for the benefit of other readers. Mine is s. confusa, which was a trade w/a garden buddy from the PNW. I wasn't too hopeful that it would make it in my climate but it has done well, though slow. In amended, neutral clay soil, shade.

It's just a basic Sarcococca Ruscifolia. I'm growing it as an espalier across a fence, also near some CA native mock orange (Philadelphus Lewisii). In the same general area (but more in the sun) I have some roses and fragrant magnolia trees. I'm also putting in a couple frangrant olive (osmanthus fragrans). It's going to be quite a lovely, fragrant area year round in this climate.

I am thinking of getting a few of the lower growing groundcover Sarcococca (I think Himalayan?) types though. I'm sure I could find a place for them. I don't think I could have enough of the lovely fragrance of Sarcococca!
