Agonizing over placement

I live in the bay area, Northern California, and I am wandering round the yard wondering what the best placement for my two new plumerias will be during the growing season.

Southwest facing, near a wall, with full afternoon sun till sunset seems to be what most people recommend, but when I saw Kawagoe's set up, it seemed like his were getting a more filtered light than I was planning.

I can do east facing, with sunlight till about 2, or west facing with stronger sunlight. I will probably bring them in for the winter, so rain and frost protection won't be an issue.

Any thoughts?
