Sitting area help -- just moved in

We just moved in to our new house. Need help with furniture placement in the sitting room. Which is actually my 72 year old mothers TV/reading/sitting area. We are not married to the furniture other than the mail carriers table. The small rocking chair is my grandmothers so we'd like to use it. My mom worked for the post office for 38 years so she has collected post offices which are in the cabinet. Not looking to paint at this time. We have temporary blinds up until we decide on window treatments. Thanks for your input.

Agree with simstress, Put the TV in the left corner something like this set up but more in line with your style but definitely on an articulating mount like she suggests. There are many pics in houzz so you can see what would work with your dimensions and your style.

I just love the post office table and understand the sentimental value, I think it would look great in an entrance area, it's seems to take up a lot of space in that particular room not allowing you more options for seating

If possible could you remove the slots top on the post office table and raise it higher and then place the TV on the post office table with the slotted area hanging above the TV; this would create a wall unit for storage and incorporate storage for sentimental items, books, etc in the post office openings and the TV is lower for good viewing, and the table shelters the benches that can scoot under the table.

Note console then TV then pictures above; all unrelated but cohesive as a group on the wall and builds vertically.

The rocker and the bookshelf cabinet can go on either side of the fireplace, and the easy chair can go on the corner of the sofa closest to the picture on the right side for extra seating.....add an upholstered ottoman with a small tray on it for a cocktail table in a pattern that has similar colors in the easy chair to relate to each other in the room....Woven wood roman shades would be great on the small windows on either side of the fireplace, and floor to ceiling curtains in a linen type fabric that sets up a contrast with the sofa and the wall color....matching end tables and matching lamps would be nice too.

Thank you for the input. I agree the TV is too high and it's frustrating as that is where the cable outlet and electrical outlet are placed. So moving to the side wall will take some doing.

Unfortunately this is the only space the mail table can go. We have typically had it in the entry way in our other homes but this one doesn't have an area for it in the entry way. It is also the one piece that can't be altered so using it as a TV stand doesn't work.

We will see what we can make work. Thanks again.

Since you are open to replacing the furniture I'm thinking that you may consider getting rid of the sofa and chair and replace the sofa with 2 rocker swivel chairs that are comfortable for her. A rocker (who doesn't like a rocker) swivel chair will give her the option to swivel towards the TV or the window if she wants to look outside. Then add a table between the two with a lamp on it to give her better reading light. The rocker could stay where it is or you could push that very cool mail carrier table towards the entrance and put the rocker on an angle next to the fireplace. You might want to put the bookcase straight on the window wall rather than angled or put it on the other side of the windows and straight on the wall if you get rid of that chair. Then you can hang a favorite painting or photo above it which will help bring the eye upwards like the TV does.

Angle grandma's rocker left of the table, facing the FP. On the right of the FP add a chest/credenza and set TV there on a swivel base. That corner will have less glare than the other side and the wall switch won't be in the way. Always a good investment to move TV installation so furniture is in an optimal arrangement. I think a pair of high quality swivel/glider/recliners will do as well as a sofa would. A rug large enough fill the room while leaving 12- 18" of floor in front of the hearth and all of the mail table's legs on the floor will warm the space and add color and pattern. If you prefer the feel of carpet you can have a piece custom cut and bound to fit the area. The two additional chairs can be moved anywhere you like, as long as they're entirely on the rug so they'll swivel and rock properly. Add a floor lamp beside them to make for a nice reading spot. Stationary panels and sheers will make for soft pleasant light. Add a pieces of colorful art, a few pillows that pick up the art colors and a trio of family photos.

What I would do: Put the TV in a more ergonomic location. Run a long coax cable from the mantel to the new TV location. Lean a big piece of art on the mantel to hide the hookups (and the mess of white wires already on the mantel). You can get power from any receptacle on the wall. Hope this helps.
