Rooting the cuttings after pruning

I usually prune my exotic hibiscus in September. Several of my plants have 1 long center trunk with 1 smaller side branch. I want to cut back the long trunk and try to graft the branches. Can I graft the thicker wood (1 1/2 in diameter) if I have a similar size root stock? Is that size less successful? (I'm fairly new to grafting)
