How to mount TV on this wall?

Hi everyone. First time posting here. Really appreciate your help and advice.

I am trying to mount a fairly small 39" TV on the wall pictured in the attachments. It is in our bedroom over a gas fireplace. However, in looking for studs, I am unable to drill past perhaps half inch. The stud finder says there are studs but I am afraid of pushing too hard on the drill, fearful of puncturing the chimney or something. Whatever I am hitting goes all the way up vertically as I tried to drill holes along the vertical line without much success.

What could this be? Has anyone encountered a similar situation? Could it be metal studs? How would you advise mounting a TV here?

Might be metal framing. Can you take a look inside the hole you drilled and see if you see anything shiny that looks like metal?

You might also have the drill in reverse, which makes it act exactly like you describe. Check the forward/reverse switch near the trigger.

What's wrong with your chimney idea? If it is a brick chimney, then you could drill into the brick with a masonry bit.

I'd be surprised if the masonry was right at the back side of the sheetrock since I believe code requires some clearance.
