Is it on woody stems?

Quite possibly one of the thornless Rubus such as Rubus odoratus. They could be too immature to flower/fruit.

I also thought of Rubus odoratus, but the leaf shape didn't look quite the ones I have seen. I don't know how variable the leaves are.

Babs the leaves are quite variable. Young growth can be much less serrated, smoother and less lobed. The fruit is not fabulous but very pleasant when you are hot and thirsty. I have often taken a break and enjoyed a few. They grow along my lane way and forest edge. I would assume they grow in your area too?

Yes, they grow in my general neck of the woods, but there aren't any on the property where we currently live.
