Need layout advice

I'd love to finish furnishing/decorating our living room but I find the room's layout awkward and difficult to plan (split level house)

Need more sitting options as we have friends visit often, the back wall seems empty.

Any thoughts on what sitting options would match my existing furniture (I'd like to keep all with the exception of our entertainment center). What other pieces should I get to make the space warm and inviting?

Angle the chaise by the window where the plant is, and put the plant on the FP side of the window. Move TV to sofa wall. Then turn the rug and float the sofa in the middle of the room, perpendicular to the railing, facing the FP. The back of it should align with that large supporting column. Add 4 smaller scale, swivel chairs - 2 at the railing side of the rug and 2 flanking the TV. I'd replace the coffee table with something less chunky and heavy looking. It should be 18" or less from each seat to be useful. Consider cleaning the FP and installing a mantel with art above. Behind the sofa you can put a tall but slim piece of casegoods as a counter balance to the FP, or do a nice floor to ceiling art gallery. Here's the basic "U" arrangement I'm suggesting. It is possible you'll need a larger rug since swivel chairs need to be entirely on or off of it to function.

Well, I'd start by having the chaise somewhere other than with its back to the fireplace! You also need end tables and lamps, and some art on the walls.

decoenthusiaste - I know u said to float the sofa but it looks really weird as u enter the room from kitchen. Perhaps with console table? Thinking tv should go on wall and maybe add on this piece

agatha, i am confused, how much company do you get and do you want them to leave quickly? they will not be comfortable on ottomans or poufs, nor if you have more than one sitting on the chaise.

if I get chairs the first thing you will see as you enter the house will be their backs-- at eye level since it's split level. Thus the thought of something lower

Here are some swivels, but the ones at the railing don't necessarily have to be swivels. The ones near the TV are going to need to swivel for sure.

I would have left the tv and couch where it was and just moved the chaise back in the corner like you did.

I love your window, btw. I would get two comfy chairs and move the chaise to a part of the room where it can come in at an angle. Good luck!

May I suggest a different rug in warmer colors and with a pattern? It will add some brightness and interest to the room. I would also make it larger than the one you have for more impact and to make the room look larger. You do definitely need some art on the walls, some fairly large pieces, and a rectangular and narrower glass and metal coffee table.
