It's not a "captain's chair" it's a basic rolling swivelling desk chair. Used in schools and offices for people who weren't important enough to get the leather upholstered ones.

Check the hardware for any patent date - it can't be older than that date, but it can be decades younger.

Yours may have had a padded or caned back insert.

I am quite sure it had a caned insert....I would guess, from the style it dates between 1910 and about 1935.....
