Looks good, Greg! I personally think the tendrils will be fine wrapping around the lattice, but you may have to help it out by tying it up just to get it going in the right direction at first. The wire would be easier for it to climb, but I wouldn't imagine it to be necessary and I think you would find that it ended up climbing both wire and lattice while you're wondering why you bothered to put up the wire.

You'll have to keep us apprised! I planted four(!) grapevines this year (I have a LOT of fencing/trellis/pergola surfaces I'm hoping to cover). They look to be about the size that yours does in the photo. I thought they were supposed to grow like 15 feet in a season?

Once they get going in year 2 or 3 they really put on a lot of growth every year then every late winter comes hard pruning.

I planted my one vine in Sept 2014. During 2015 and 2016 it did not do too much (above ground anyway) and I cut off any baby grapes that appeared. This year, the vine took off to 6'+ and we will get about a half-dozen smallish bunches of supersweet grapes. UW Extension says that the Somerset variety has the potential to produce 25-30LB on a vine. I will be happy to get 5 LB some day.

BTW, I didn't even bother with a trellis until this year. I had a grape bush.

My oldest grapevine is doing really well. I don't know about pounds but it has about 200 good size clusters of about 40-50 grapes each. So far the new grapevine hasn't grabbed onto the wood lattice though it's trying.

I have two different grape vines that are both finishing their second season in the ground. I plan to trellis both next spring for their third season and I hope to see a few clusters of grapes. I plan to remove all but one cluster on each to see if I can just get a taste of the fruit without discouraging the plants' growth too much.

gjcore, how many years for your productive vine to really get going?
