There are hundreds of plants which would grow happily in those conditions. No need to squander money and resources on electricity or to put in ugly light fittings to grow things outdoors. If the current selection struggles just choose more suitable plants. You seem to have a couple of Phormiums which are neither grasses nor reeds. But they need good light.

Thanks floral, i believe a couple are a type phorium, it was more a generalisation of the theme we have adopted through-out our gardens, must also excuse as we are new to this but are really enjoying the experience and producing something pleasing to come home to. At the moment the new additions in that particular garden are doing well. if you have any suggestions though that may adapt well in this shaded area keeping with the theme we have, i would greatly appreciate it.

Seeing the Kangaroo Paw tells me you are gardening in a climate completely different to mine. Your 'shade' could well be far lighter than a similar situation in my climate. I suggest you ask over on the Perennials Forum for suggestions.
