Easy city backyard makeover

last modified: 13 years ago
This backyard was in need of help. There were 2 objectives - to make it enjoyable to spend time in and to make it as maintenance free as possible. I covered the entire yard with heavy landscape material to naturally kill the grass . Then we drew a plan on paper and began to implement it. We poured a small concrete patio and then used some old patio stones for the walk and patio. Coloured stone and mulch were added to create separate areas of interest. Then we planted trees and plants.

This backyard would only get better once the plants are filled in.

Nice. Now you could think about power-washing the fence and sealing it... (try Sikkens stain/finishes).

Did you have a plan or just designed as you went. Nice job.

We had a plan in mind and made a sketch. Having a "clean slate" was really great because it made it much easier to achieve. Thanks!

Wonderful! Good for you! Only suggestion I have would be to build gazebo/pergola over dining area. They are wonderful (we have two). That, and maybe more plantings along fence to block view of houses (bamboo in container?).

I love the curved walkway, diagonal patio and rectangular lot - wow! I have a bigger yard, but love this even as a special spot (or series if spots) outside, whether done with stone, plants, flower beds or whatever. i think your size ratios are one of the things that makes this "right"!

Nice job! I love your selection of plants and trees. Even though it's not a huge yard you were able to make several spaces to utilize. Well thought out.

I love it! Houzz is such a great place to share ideas with each other. I bought an old house in the fall that I knew was going to need some major work inside and out. There is still about 3 feet of snow in the yard so I've still got time to make plans for landscaping this summer. Your makeover would work well in my space as well and I like that it is easy maintenance. Closing in on 60 means I'm tired of being tied to yard work! Thanks for sharing a beautiful job!
