luvcannin, I don't know what kind of sweet potatoes you have but most take at least 100 days to make. Do you have 100 days left before frost? I have never heard of sweet potato slips attached to the mother potato make potatoes, but that doesn't mean it can't happen. Mostly the mother potatoes just make more slips. I had some left over a couple of years ago that I buried in the garden to see what they might do and they just made a great big clump of pretty vines but no potatoes, maybe that was just mine. I think you could safely harvest all the leaves and not loose anything. But this is just my opinion.

I stuck sweets that were sprouting in veggie bin in the ground year before last. We got a small harvest of small finger sized tubers. It also flowered. I didn't know at the time you should only plant the slip(?). Haven't planted them since.

Now that I have thought about it the mother potatoes that I put in the ground kept making slips for a while and then they rotted. But this was late in the season so I don't know what would have happened if they had been put in the ground early. I have found that when they quit making slips they generally rot.

I've done this, before, Kim. It was unintentional, just like in your case. I don't recall if they made any new, harvestable, roots. But I do remember that it wasn't much worth digging them. If they made a harvest, it was very little. The "mother roots" became pretty scabby and ugly too.

I will leave most of them and see what happens. This slip bed produced more slips than I had room for so I just left them. They are pretty and I could harvest some of the leaves for market.

I was checking moisture levels on my real sweet potato bed and felt a nice potato. I almost did a back flip. I am hoping to get a harvest big enough to have some to sell.

I couldn't figure out why my leaves were so droopy. Well when I watered I did not have the valve open. They are good and happy now.
