I LOVE hydrangea. I have several in my front yard and right now is the time they start getting buds. My gardening experience is limited but I can suggest, not to over water, give them fertilizer in the spring (now) make sure they get good sun exposure but not full sun all day. They should be full of leaves right now. I am in S Calif. and they do very well here. Not sure what zone you are in. In late fall I cut mine back a lot. They are about 3 - 4 feet tall now. Look for a fertilizer that is formulated for acid loving plants.

Some people use coffee grounds, but that can attract ants

I love them too! One thing I've read is that they bloom on 'old' stock. If they're cut back to far each year they're unlikely to bloom. That certainly proved true with ours.

The white hydrangea are probably Annabelle arborescens. They bloom on new growth/wood, cut them back to the ground in late winter.
As for no blooms, are the leaves large and healthy? Do you fertilize your lawn? Lawn fertilizer can cause overgrowth of leaves and no blooms on hydrangea.

Fertilizer for acid loving plants....won't it change their color to blue? And coffe grounds? Do you mean the scatter the used grounds around the base or something else? I also live in Pennsylvania so could use a fertilizer brand suggestion.

I don't do a darn thing to mine and they are huge.

They need sun and like to be watered if it's been dry.

I only cut mine back if it is the way of a walking path or reaching my outdoor faucet.

I think the variety matters, for me the Nikko blue is most reliable bloomer. I had an Annabelle and removed it, wasn't doing well in the place it was in.

I have another white one (can't remember variety name) and that one is doing well.

Suzanne - the blooms on my plants have never changed to blue. Yes with the used coffee grounds, spread around base of plant.

Have you done anything to your hydrangeas since they were planted? Do you use herbicides or pesticides around them? Do you water them? Do they receive afternoon sun (if it's hot, this will absolutely kill them if not watered almost everyday)? Did they leaf and then you had a late freeze?

We have an in ground sprinkler system, so they get plenty of water and have a little cover through tout the day. Lots of lush green leaves. I'll try the fertilizer heavy this month. Have you ever heard of male and female plants? Someone suggested to me that they were all the same "sex". ???????
