Where is the refrigerator and oven in this rendering? Could be that this is a range, so oven under the cook top? But the refrigerator- where? In addition to making sure that the cook's back is turned to the guests, I see no real path for smooth prep. Can't see a "smart" design yet. Can you tell us more about the plan?

The ovens and microwave are with the refrigeration in close proximity to the farmhouse sink. There will also be a prep sink across from the cook top on the island.

The cook will be facing the bar height seating and guests in the living room and when at prep sink facing people at island and breakfast table... It is a very open floor plan and centered between the breakfast room and living room.

I hope that clears up how this design works for you Laurie, feel free to ask more...

    Smiles!

THERE it is. Now I see the smart design. Love, love love that you included a prep sink. This kitchen is beautiful and a workhorse, too, if needed. Very nice!

Do you need that many seats in 3 different areas? I would fall over all those stools!

Do you know what this design is missing? Chairs. I bet we can fit a few more in if we try.

  • PRO

    You are joking right?

Our clients entertain large crowds and wanted at least 8 stools. So 4 at peninsula and 4 at table. Then 8 at breakfast table.

The dishwasher might be better on the right of the sink. Mine was in my prep/cooking zones and created a traffic jam when someone wanted to help and, this doesn't look like a one cook kitchen.

Really guys this is a huge space and not a small kitchen by any means... it will work with informal get together when buffet style is happening. Milly since we removed a wall this is a very large space and can handle the design. There is a very large living room with a fire place behind the peninsula

There a separate dining room in another room

It would be nice if you hold your criticism until the job is done. These are renderings and the cabinets are being made now. I will post the afters when it is complete

It would be too late to make changes if the job was done! :) Welcome to the Kitchen Forum, where advice is given whether you asked for it, or not. Criticism can be constructive to the process. The bar, counter, and table height seating is a little over the top but, so what...you keepin' that d/w in the corner with the cabinets to the counter? Is this a "serving" kitchen rather than one that could use a fair amount of prep space for the large groups being entertained? We bring our needs along with our critiques so mine is that the amphitheater seating and traffic/lack of prep space in the corner would bug me. I don't care for an audience while I cook and always have people in there wanting to help. If it's more of a cocktail party situation, looks fine.

Maybe a few tweaks, but I embrace the seating. How many times have you been to a house party where everybody gravitates to the the kitchen--- only to stand awkwardly, be in the way of a cook or two? I've been to too many.

If this is a client's desire, then go for it. Both young and old can be accommodated, in this plan. Older can sit at a table- even in the living room- without feeling "out". Younger folks can sit at the stools/chairs. Just get the ones that go up and down, easily. Hey, want to help with prep? Push the chair in, and chop your heart out.

I do suggest a real, thorough look at venting in the area, though. Make sure it doesn't get too warm in there with a lot of bodies and cooking going on. Hood is key. Also look carefully at the area nearest to the living area- you'll want to make sure the electric configuration works well. Maybe a shelf for folks to charge their cells, but also for kids. Prop up their computers, let them do homework while you cook.

If it's big enough, could be really cool.

If they entertain large groups, the aisle between the island and the fridge does not look wide enough for all the traffic will be going through that space. Especially with the wall ovens opening into a traffic area.

Benjesbride, I assure you... we are well aware of clearances between appliance areas and seating areas. This is a rendering and was put up to show the before and what is to come. There is plenty of room.

Laurie, we are planning under counter multi USB outlets for charging at seating locations for computers and phones.

In your professional opinion, what is enough room here? What aisle widths did you end up with? The kitchen looks like it's potentially a busy intersection between living/dining/hallway/garage.

Sure- give your dimensions. If you're tweaking, you're tweaking! There is a big part of me that wants to turn that island around. Get the seated/standing guests out of the way of the cooking space. Put the cabs on the other side. Make them work- storage?

Very nice of you to be concerned about the esthetics of this kitchen, we have tweaked it several times with the client and they are thrilled and excited. It is in production.

If you are a designer you know that everyone has their needs and through many design meetings the outcome had been clearly thought out and approved.

You can pick it apart all you want, but after designing award winning kitchen designs for 30 years, I understand éveryone has their own opinion and the most important option is that my clients are happy with the final results. I have never had anyone complain afterwards. They are thankful that they found our company and how we have transformed their home as well as adding value to it.

What type of lighting are you using for the kitchen? I do like the look of it. Definitely has a more modern feel for informal parties.

Night owl...We had the dishwasher on the other side of the sink and the client wanted to move it. Even though we try our best to explain the best layout, sometimes, people do what they want. We know what they decided was not the best placement, they wanted more room to the right of the sink.... Ultimately, they are the ones who make the final call.
