Trying to avoid TV over fireplace

Hello,

We are in the planning stages for a 1st floor remodel and, as it stands now, the TV (60") will be placed over our fireplace. No one in my real life agrees with me that this is a bad idea.

The fireplace is not pre-existing so it can be moved anywhere and will be the only one on this level. There is also no formal living room.

Would you suggest moving it to the wall with the slider and changing the slider into french doors that flank either side?

Down the road, we plan on adding on a screened in porch off of this room where the slider is.

Also, the opening on the right hand side has been reduced to 10' wide.

I've had tv's over the fireplace, and it's very uncomfortable to watch. Tv should be at eye level. Believe me, you won't like it.

Something like this... minus the TV.

I am afraid that we'll struggle in furniture layout to incorporate both the tv and fireplace.

Hi Jo Jo,

I HATE tv's over the fireplace personally, always looks like they're fighting with one another. Then add a ceiling fan, cranking your neck, ugh.

But, I wouldn't compromise the screen porch, or the flow to that either...

Is there any place else you would want your fireplace?

Can you add extra windows by the slider and then omit one of the doors to the side of the fireplace so that you can offset the TV to the right or left of the fireplace?

Or you could put the fireplace in the corner, offset the TV and add extra windows on the blank wall?

Could you possibly do lower built ins on either side of the fireplace with shorter windows above? Or move the windows closer to the corners to accommodate built ins on either side, with the TV in one of them?

It depends on what you want to be the focal point, and definitely think about furniture arrangement. It doesn't seem like you have enough room to have couches around the TV and then two cozy chairs by the fireplace. I agree you can try and put the TV in built ins flanking the fireplace or catty corner, but that might be a little far from couches to actually watch it. Other option is TV on straight wall and fireplace in the corner. I agree with you, not a huge fan of TV over fireplace, even though it seems very popular these days! Love all your windows!
