Window over stove - ventilation?

We're looking at fixing up our old kitchen which has a window over the stove. We currently don't have a rangehood. If we're to improve ventilation, what sort of fan/extractor should be used without moving the stove? We're on a tight budget, so island hoods are too expensive for us.

Any thought appreciated.

You have two choices; a downdraft exhaust (pop-up) or a ceiling extractor fan. Neither is ideal, but you are stuck with one of those choices. Either will require a new electrical line for power and a vent through the exterior wall. While the ceiling extractor is less attractive, it would be my choice because it works better than a pop-up IMO. If you choose the ceiling unit, buy one with a remote blower motor for quieter operation.

Redoing some of the kitchen may trigger building code updates. Talk to the local building permit department so you will have the current info.

Remove the window, resheetrock the wall, center the stove then add your hood. Rework your budget and cut where you can.

Install a smaller island hood from the ceiling. It will be worth it in the long run.

Do you cook a lot? I am thinking the window will be hard to keep clean. Is there anywhere else to put your stove?

@chiflipper But both downdraft and ceiling extractor fans are ridiculously expensive. How about mounting a bathroom fan in the ceiling?

Many units available for under$200. The duct work pieces can be bought off the shelf at a Big Box store. Use metal tape (NOT duct tape) to join and seal the sections.
