We started with the Euro-style kitchen -almond melamine with wood- doors, Formica counter tops and back splash, and florescent lights. I didn't want to rip out everything. Our cabinet guy said the cabinet "base" was in very good shape. We did have to replace the box under the sink. We decided to change the doors, go with granite counter tops, add tile back splash, replace the florescent lights with LED's, add pendant lights above the island, and add under counter lighting. I actually measured and ordered the solid MDF baked-on painted doors myself. They fit perfectly. We were able to reuse the old euro-style hinges. We did have to order the grid doors above the micro from a shop here in town. I wanted the double thickness granite on the upper part of the island. We had to beef it up to hold the added weight. We used a conversion kit for the pendant lights (purchased from houzz.com). The ceiling turned out great where he took out the old florescent lights and I love the LED's. Then of course I had to have new bar stools (also from houzz.com). It was a 7-week learning process -but so worth it.
