Clematis and Japanese beetles

Japanese Beetles are moving into our area. This is the first year they have bothered the clematis. Flowers and leaves are skeletonized and leaves that aren't get large brown spots or completely die. They seem to prefer the white blooming clematis the most. Now that the JB are almost gone I am seeing new leaf growth. How are your plants affected?

I don't find that the leaves are eaten, but the white flowers are, unfortunately. I wish I'd known that, but I won't be adding any more summer blooming white or pale colored clematis.

Sorry to hear that! My roses were the choice snacks for jb. I didn't notice them on clematis and didn't know they liked it . Are you dunking them in soap water to kill them ? Gross job but gotta be done.

Yes, when the beetles are bad, part of my morning routine is wandering around with a quart container of soapy water and knocking them in while they are still too cool to move very fast.
