Looks to me like one of the variegated forms of Aucuba japonica.

Not at all - a very tough and hardy evergreen shrub that can be easily grown outdoors in milder climates (z6 and above).

Are the leaves arranged opposite each other on the stem or alternately? As far as I can tell from the photo they are alternate. Codaeum ('Croton') is alternate. Aucuba is opposite.

Good observation! I did try to check carefully and AFAICT, the leaves are arranged more or less opposite :-)) But if not, then agree aucuba is likely not the right ID.

Yes. Those leaves are alternate. Hence your plant is not Aucuba. It's Codiaeum aka Croton. Aucuba is hardy, Codiaeum is not,
