Good to know. Sometimes growers, or even whole States have different names for the same thing; Florida is infamous for that... e.g., Cara cara orange is called Red Navel; Sambokan lemons, Sambo or Zambo.

I wish the fruits would be named by their original name. I rarely find that in stores. They say navel, valencia, blood orange or mandarine, sweeties and red grapefruits. I would love to know what variety I buy. Took me a while to figure out that fancy lemon or sweet lemon are in fact Meyers. No clue what kind of lemon the yellow ones are. Just assuming maybe eureka? Would anybody on this list be able to identify the variety they buy?

Follow-on Question: .....so, what really is a "Ruby Red" ? UCR's Citrus Variety web site does not list such a grapefruit. Is it "Star Ruby"? Is it "Rio Red"? Other?

It is rather easy to tell the variety of lemons commonly sold in the supermarket. The lemons that have a protruding nipple on the bottom are Eureka. Lisbon lemons have a more rounded bottom. Lisbons can have a nipple but it is much less indistinct.

Texas uses several "all inclusive" ; i.e., "brands" that may include one of several different varieties. I suspect "Ruby Red" is one of those.

OK, thank you. So "Ruby Red" is really a brand name, or marketing name for one or more types of Grapefruit. That is what I suspected.

I have Redblush, Flame, and Rio Red in the ground. The Flame produced amazing fruit, the Rio Red is still too young to judge. Should I be rushing out to grab a "Star Ruby" too? the UCR site listing says they are more cold sensitive and needy. Anyone out there with these in the ground - in Northern California - - - ...with comments and suggestions?

I think Ruby Red is just a marketing name that Texas (Rio Grande Valley) uses that can include several of their "red" grapefruits.

this is interesting as Harris sells a dwarf Ruby red. FW sells Star ruby, both the same??

BTW: My local Costco has Star Ruby's and Rio Reds on the floor [Well, at least they did late last week!]

There are Star Ruby, Rio Star, Rio Red, Ruby Red, Ruby Fresh (definitely a marketing name).... They all came out of the RGV in Texas; and I am not sure even the growers know what they are any more. IMO I think Rio Star is the one to look for; but I am certainly no grapefruit expert... I don't even like them. The only one I grow is Oro Blanco; everyone seems to love them; and I can tolerate them.
