We are looking for some ideas for a mud/laundry room with a bench and hooks. Here are some pictures of the space. The size of the space is 13x12. Thx!

is there just the one door we can see? where does it go to? it looks like you are taking over a room formerly a dining room.

you are lucky the room gets great natural light. i would consider more durable flooring - whether a vinyl or a tile - because you'll have lots of sand or snow or dirt coming in here.

the long blank wall would be great for deep cabinets and storage - washer, dryer, maybe a laundry sink, heavy coats, out-of-season storage, and some specialty storage for athletic gear.

the short wall with the door could accomodate a bench with hooks and shelf over, maybe cubbies, for jackets, in-season overcoats, bookbags, sports bags, and a place to hang the dog leash and/or store the kitty litter box.

good ideas above. Ensure you have counter space for folding clothes. & consider whether you want to install a fold down ironing board. This way all similar chores are in same room. Can have up & down units or side by side depending on space & needs of family.

A mud room in effect should be able to clean then store away all that out door gear. Do you have a dog? Is the room accessible on its own...from outdoors? And where have you been ie how muddy are you or is it a laundry room you need? Very different things

Since I'm not a fan of the completely open hooks & cubbies, consider these two options for built-ins:

When my children were young, my utility room had a deep double closet with shelves above a rod & at one end. I added a free-standing bench. I also had a farmhouse style sink, w/d, chest freezer, fold-down ironing board (ugh!), and a pantry cabinet. It was great!

I have to have all that sports equipment and dog stuff hidden away but not a fan of spending thousands to get a kitchen lookalike extension,we have an indoor tap 6" from floor with a concrete v shaped trench, great for washing wellies, the dogs etc then of course some cupboards and hooks for essentials, really important that it could be a room accessed from outdoors so people ould enter the house after stowing away and cleaning up the real mud

It is important to know exactly what you will be using the space for. As wiggomydog pointed out, the mudroom can be a multi-purpose space. Function first, then design ideas will follow. We have designed many mudrooms which include laundry area, charging station/ mail drop, sports equip. storage, kids lockers, etc. Sometimes with plumbing for pets or muddy kids and dads. This is valuable real estate, if utilized correctly.

I agree, especially with country living, some of these images are great but certainly not functional as a mud room. White walls everywhere. We have 3 different descriptions in uk...utility room obviously does what it says, simply a space that holds washer, drier, freezers etc. then we have laundry rooms where more space is needed as you will be storing your clean and dried clothes ready for ironing as well as space for all the to be cleaned clothes. Finally we have mud or boot rooms, people would only build these with direct access from outside, giving you space to clean up and store from all outdoor pursuits before entering the potentially beautiful interior.all of the above would add great value to a house in the Uk but in the states when you say MUD ROOM do you mean all of the above?

If you're worried about kids in the space, a painted wall will take a real beating. Consider beadboard up 3/4 of the wall. Painted semi-gloss white to match your trim, it will be durable and easy to wash and touch up, and your hooks can go securely into the wood.

Vinyl on the floor; flat weave commercial carpeting as a wainscot up to at least 4 feet (1.25 m) high. The best for soaking up equipment scuffs etc. and looking pristine.

Since this will be a real mudroom, the preferred color for floor and wainscoting is.....the color of your local mud or close to it.

If the wainscot is mud colored, you won't know it's dirty...I guess I like to see the grime so I can clean it. My mudroom has the 3/4 wall high vertical tongue and groove paneling painted a verdigris color with a porcelain limestone floor, it looks good and is durable and easy to clean. Laurie, It looks like you have dark hardwood in your mudroom, you probably know they show every bit of dust...get the biggest indoor/outdoor rug you can find in a neutral dark tan tweed and cover it up.

One of the most useful items in our mudroom is an old dresser and each drawer is assigned not by person but by item. One is for scarfs, one for mittens, one for winter toques, one for summer hats, one for what I call farm boot socks (heavy). If you have young children or grandchildren or even friends with young kids hang a board with wooden pegs at their height. For the mishmash of keys that have become our lives I have a straight board 12 inches long, 4 inches wide that I screwed dresser knobs (small) and that is where the keys are hung. 4 season living makes a boot drying rack an appreciative item as well. Just have fun putting the room together. I will admit our old home did not transcend into the graceful elegant abode we had aimed for 20 years ago but rather a bohemian collection of our life.

This is a mudroom my company did several years ago. The family has 3 active children and wanted a place for knapsacks, etc. There is a separate entrance into the mudroom so wet and muddy feet can be cleaned up before entering the house. There are benches, drawers, hooks and storage area below for those baseball and soccer footware.

A toilet so you don't have to enter the main house after working in the garden. A laundry sink to soak muddy clothes, clean dirty shoes or boots, or even wash the dog. My outer entry had a pet door so if the dog is caught out in the rain he has access to a dry interior. The dog considered the room HIS.
A place to sit when removing foot gear and clothing, ideally with a lift up lid for storage. Possibly a small fridge, as working outside can be thirsty work. I have a much smaller room that is just off the laundry room, so clothing can go straight into the washer. House coats are hung close to the laundry room. There's a door with dead bolts between the mud room and laundry area. Towels too are a must, so at least one good sized storage cupboard, large enough for paper towels, flower food, vases, pots, repellents, hornet sprays etc. For me a mud room unclutters the house and has to earn it's space.
