We're in a sort of a dip, but at a high elevation, so I think we verge on zone 3 even though all maps say that I'm zone 4.

How depressing, spedigrees, and it's still summer! Reports like this remind me how much the climate varies from the top to the bottom of New England (speaking map-wise).

I hope it was just an aberration and you'll still have a month or two of warmish weather.

we usually get a light frost around 9/18 but this year it's hot instead. I think our nights were cooler in August than they are this September. Due to cucumber beetles killing my winter squash, no winter squash this year. I planted two hills of zephyr summer squash in the same bed and those started producing about 2 weeks ago. Also just started getting poona kheara cucumbers last week. Also planted very late. I expected to have lost things by now. Maybe tomatoes will have time to ripen after all. They really started to ripen last week.

We are in a dip, too, so get a light frost before our neighbors due.

Now I'm wondering with the excessive warmth if things are going to want to bud out. I have little experience with late warmth and don't know how long the warm spell has to last to confuse all the plants! Our tomatoes were doing well and this weekend all the leaves disappeared, so we know we finally got some hornworm visitors somewhere, but those guys are so doggone hard to see! Found some yesterday covered in parasitic wasp larvae. YEA!

It was 33 when I got up and still dark. Dropped to 32 at daybreak. I did a quick walk to the pepper patch which looks ok but I can see some white on the tops of recent cut tall grass etc. Basil planted among other peppers next to house looks ok so far but I haven't checked the high tunnel yet. Left the sides rolled up which might have been a big mistake. Just North of Concord NH but in a low lying area, hills all around us except to the west. I think the prostrate rosemary and lemon verbena are so crowded among other plants by brick walkway that they should be ok. Lemon verbena goes dormant. Rosemary can take it a little colder than 32.

We got down to 34 or 35, but since the river is still fairly warm, it gave us a blanket of fog that kept the frost away. I'm glad since I didn't remove veggies from the garden!

NHBabs, sorry for the delay in answering. It was odd that lemon gem marigolds at the east end of tomato bed died but west end are fine. Basil next to the house is still doing well BUT looks like tonight will be 35 or lower so I better pick peppers and tomatoes. I've been leaving peppers as long as possible trying to get as many to turn red as possible. This year grew Buran peppers (Pine Tree seeds) a Polish heirloom, that are big, meaty bell types and very productive. Hoping to get more red ones to roast for the freezer. I started pepper seeds later this year and completely flubbed up, losing a lot of seedlings to lack of water (didn't have soil wet enough to start with). I think impatients in the old wash tub planter on the barn step didn't get watered enough while I was away last week but they are still pretty decent looking. Haven't planted next year's garlic yet. It's odd to see some things still blooming and other plants such as goldenrod dark brown in the meadow. Haven't dug potatoes yet either but didn't plant until mid-June.

Last night we got down only to 36 or so, and have now squeaked through another almost frost. It is supposed to be a bit warmer for a few nights again.

what?!!! It was 28 here. What a difference despite being so close in miles.

Being next to the Merrimack gives us a little extra warmth in the fall and keeps a us a bit colder in the spring.

We had another frost the night before last, but I still have some plants flowering, although rather sparsely and lacklusterly (ok I know the latter isn't really a word) in pots on the porch and on the cement block wall. Is it wrong for me to wish that a good hard freeze would happen and just kill everything so I can finish putting things away and cleaning out the beds? After all, they will all be back next summer, either from saved seeds or in perennial fashion. I'm ready for fall.

spedigrees, I haven't had time to finish up yet. I am terrible about fall clean up and since I'm retired I ought to do a decent job to be better ready next spring. I did plant a mixed cover crop in one bed that's looking pretty good. I still have the high tunnel to fix up and I'm not sure I have any time left to plant some seeds for overwintering. Still have to empty the planters that are finally ready to be done. I might spruce up one planter but plopping a pumpkin on top of the dying foliage in honor of the Fall. There's a pot of prostrate rosemary that overwintered in the garage successfully that I should try again. Not sure if the lemon verbena is ready to go dormant or not. A good hard freeze makes some things definite and I know there have been times when I'm glad to say goodbye to a tomato overabundance (which didn't happen this year). But, I'd like to skip November entirely. I hate that month.

Our weather is so weird now. Very warm, night temps also very warm. One night this week it should get into the low 30's for our area, but not for our house. However, after that one single low-temp night , for several days we will be back up to warm daytime and nighttime temps. I'm assuming my plants are spending extra energy getting roots ready, but I'm not so sure. Many of my echinaceas grown from seed this year are supposed to flower the second year, but they are now putting up flowers, which I've read can happen when the soil is fertile. 'Prairie Splendor' echinacea is supposed to flower the first year, but not the others. I cut one bud off and found that there was NO basal foliage. Just the stem for the bud.

we've had 3 hard frosts but my damned evie strawberries are still producing! still in upper 60's during the day here! unreal! should be in low 50's now.

I started pulling up old pepper plants but I'm kind of sorry I pulled up the shishito peppers in my high tunnel. They didn't look like they had been touched by frost although I still have the high tunnel sides rolled up and doors left open. The plants still had a few blossoms and the peppers I had missed picking were still good. I wonder if this type of pepper can take colder temps. Saw a blossom cluster on my Mayflower viburnum.

Steve, how was your summer? Zone 3--you're up there! NH and VT were very wet, but on the coast we were dry dry dry. In fact, two Fridays ago our well ran dry twice, the first time it's ever run dry at all under normal usage. What about you all up there?

we had a very wet, cold spring and early summer. then it went to sunny and dry with very little rain until just lately. rivers were at a trickle. we broke records a couple weeks ago. temps in the upper 80's when we should have been in the 50's. had some of the plants come out of dormancy.

Our spring and summers sound similar, but we haven't had dormancy issues, I'm assuming mainly because since our fall is later we never had anything go dormant to begin with. We also had a wet wet wet spring. Tough start to tourist season down here! I can't believe you all up there were in the 80's. That's crazy!

yeah. i just took out the ac yesterday. still in lows 60's. how about that rain! heard in some places in w. maine will get close to 8in.! crazy! 2in. in a short period up here it will flood but since it was so dry i don't think it will.
