That damage is old. Perhaps a year or two.

The brown patches are necrotic (dead) tissue. There are many possible causes: insect or caterpillar damage, fungal infection, physiological damage, for example. Which particular cause or combination of causes really cannot be told from a photograph nor can the age of the damage. Your county extension service would be your best source for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
