'Gold Standard'..for bsmith

Here's a progression of the color changes 'Gold Standard' goes through over the season.

First a close-up of a leaf in early May.

A few days later it's starting to lighten up.

Here's an example of what 'Gold Standard' is prone to: sporting.

By early June things are getting quite golden.

A couple of weeks later some of the leaves start to take on a bit of a blush, almost as if the gold center is getting dirty.

And 5 weeks later we've gone from golden to parchment, particularly if it gets a fair bit of direct sun.

And this is what one of mine looks like today. It sees a fair bit less direct light than the picture of the one above, so it doesn't quite get to the parchment stage but as you can see it's starting to look ratty, perfectly normal for this time of year.

Finally an example of an HVX infected plant in the spring.

Hope this puts it into perspective for you!

What a SUPREME hosta in every way. Fun all season long. And a real heads up to obtain it from a reputable source (not a box store) to insure that it is not infected with HVX. Many of the Gold Standards I saw in public places in downtown Chicago on a trip a few years ago were badly infected.

When I see a healthy big one it is such a pleasure. Thank you Pauline Banyai.

I love the progression pictures, thank you for the story. I purchased mine a few years back from a big box store before I knew about HVX hopefully it will be fine.

Loved seeing the progression shots Pieter! I always wondered what Gold Standard was really like. I will put it on my wish list but need to make sure I get it from a reputable source.

Halycon is another one of those oldies but goodies. I was looking out for one and saw it at Walmart this year for a reasonable price and a good size. Lo and behold---hosta virus on some of those Halycon! So purchased one from a trusted source instead.

Pieter, these wonderful pictures do the plant justice in a big way! Love the progression of colour, don't have one...but will certainly pick it up the next time I shop for hostas - in memory of Bruce.
