cool snap

We've hit a patch of really cool weather here--in fact, so cool (nights dipping into the low 50's or even upper 40's) I've moved all my more tender hoyas inside...hopefully it'll warm up again and they can go back out for at least a few more weeks...

Anyhow, I somehow left my H. mirabilis outside in the cold and the change has been amazing--buds are swelling, new growth is popping up everywhere, new peduncles are forming--if the plant could get up and do a little dance I think it would...

I can take a hint as well as the next guy and I'm guessing this means mirabilis likes cooler growing conditions--so it might be a good candidate for next to the glass on a window sill or well away from the ballast under lights...I don't recall anyone mentioning this is a cool growing species, but I'm sure it's written somewhere and I just missed it...so if you missed it too, I would suggest keeping this plant as cool as possible....

Mine budded up last year, in the middle of Summer, full sun, 90F, so, I don't know!

Mirabilis comes from Suan Phung, Khao Learn, Ratchaburi, Thailand, where the average daytime temperature is 81F, year round. Yearly average for nighttime temps is 68F.

Well, mine's having a little party on my cool deck, so I DK either :-).....this plant did bloom for me last summer under "normal" temps (highs in the 80's, lows in the 60's) but has struggled this weird summer---weeks of torrential daily rains, followed by weeks of intense heat (mid to upper 90's, lows in the 70's) followed by this cool snap...I have gotten very little bloom on any of my hoyas this year...

How about you share some pictures of your blooms ?---it would make me happy to at least see someone else's flowers....Thanks :-)

I brought all the small pots inside for the cool snap here, but will probably take them back to the porch this afternoon. Supposed to have one day in the 60's for the high next week, but the lows aren't supposed to be too bad and they sure enjoy being outside. I'll have to bring them all in for the winter soon enough!

If I could find the SD card (note to self, don't pull the SD card out of your camera in the middle of re-potting), I'd share pics! I do have some of the plant in bud, though!

I really hope it flowers again this year because I love the appearance and the scent of the flowers....now you have me worried about temps. so I may pull it in for the next couple of nights...just to be safe....(note the ant on the flower to the left)...
