No idea ... however, cut it open, scrape any seeds out and brush it with oil and garlic and bake it until it's tender.

What was the source of the seed?

Since it isn't something you planted specifically - in which case you'd know the name - then it is most likely some sort of cross pollinated member of the large squash family rather than a true variety of any kind.

Squash readily cross so saved seeds from the previous year's crop or plants that sprout up out of the compost pile or from trucked in soil and supplements are almost always some unknown cross pollinated mutant. Sometimes they are edible, sometimes yucky.

This one looks like it had a pumpkin somewhere in the family tree. You'd cook it just like any winter squash variety. Cut in half, scoop out the seeds and bake with toppings of your choice. We prefer butter and brown sugar.

I have no idea the origins of the seed. My daughter brought it home from school. Their class helped plant a community garden and harvested this week. This is what she brought home. Thanks for the input! I hope it's edible. If not, I'm sure the chickens will enjoy it.

The skin still looks tender, my guess would be an unripe pumpkin of some kind.

The stem looks very rounded. What part of the country/world was this grown in?

It was grown in North Central Montana. Skin is shiny bright yellow.

The reason I asked is my Puerto Rican neighbor once showed me a squash she eats that is diff from what I grow (she wouldn't even try it) and iirc it was a similar color. Was this ever green when it was growing or what colors have changed?

It looks some kind of ethnic fruit to me.

I have no idea what color it started out as. My daughter bright it home from school, the class helped at a community garden. I'm guessing it's some cross pollination result.

Ask your child's teacher!

susanzone5 that to obvious a solution for the original poster.

Or....gee..... War garden, it could be that I DID ask the teacher and she said it's a speghetti squash, which clearly it's not. So obviously the teacher knows less than I do about types of squash. But thanks for your input.

well open it and you will know for sure since spaghetti squash is obvious once opened.

I did. It's not a speghetti squash. It looked very underdeveloped. Guessing it was a type of pumpkin picked way too soon.
