decor disaster

Okay so I'm being a bit dramatic but all the brainstorming and scrolling through photos online for inspiration is giving me whiplash. I am in need of some serious help! I recently moved into my flat and I bought a beige couch...I was going to go for a grey one this one was so much cheaper. So here I am, beige/light brown couch and I have no idea what colour rug, curtains or cushions to get. I would really really appreciate some help with this one. :-). I'm going for a cosy but bright look. I would really like for my place to be the kind of place where my friends and family can relax and put their feet up.

Hi cawaps! That's my bad, the first was taken at night. I'd say the third picture is a more accurate representation of the colour of the couch. I like pastel colours, which I thought would go really well with a grey couch, not so sure about brown. My style is modern. My living space is about 5 m by 3 m ( very small). the side opposite the window is open to a kitchen area.

So basically, a beige sofa and cream walls and floor? You can go in any direction!

The beige is so neutral that I can't think of anything that wouldn't go. What are your favorite colors?

So your guest can relax and put their feet up, you need a coffee table. Again, so many choices for this. Modern, traditional, do you need extra storage?

I love pastel greys, pink and greens, I was thinking of getting a very low, dark brown coffee table because the couch is quite low as well. I do need extra storage and so I was thinking along the lines of the treasure chest coffee table.

Your sofa is too large for this room. It's a very small, narrow room and you should have gotten a love seat size sofa. Can you return it?

How do you feel about pink? I like pink and beige together (like pink/beige/cream brown or pink/beige/cream/black).

Also, where are you located? I'm guessing not US, which matters if we start making recommendations from specific stores/sources.

wow pink plus cream plus black plus beige-that'd be really cool!

I see no disaster:) just room in the making

do you prefer solids? patterns? which patterns?

what else is in the room?

    the paint stays, right?

I found this picture that might make a great color combination.

I suggest this room because teal and lime are two current colors that are easily found in items that you will need for your room. Just makes it easier to shop for items.

Traditional Living Room · More Info

Walls the color of sofa or one step darker on the paint chip.

    Light cream linen curtains

And accent wall or art piece with a large dose of lime green

Deep teal area rug and pillows with other accents in turquoise/teal around the room. Some black for wow; a small chair/s, end table, lamp shade all done in black leather, etc.

Green plants and brass lighting and art on the wall.

let me put smth together mostly for myself so I don't alternate between the tabs..and tell me whether I'm completely off track..

    (lol)

the idea -trying to marry colors that you have and colors that you love, or some of these, in a pattern, either simple or elaborated one..

can be done with a rug, a throw, drapes..all of the above even, just keep to more or less same colors

    most start with rugs

I start with whatever I fall in love and is smaller and affordable lol

can be art by the way. easily so

(btw can't find my favorite pillow..gone. but there are tons, really. everywhere. these I just found to feel whether I'm anywhere on the right track

the coffee table..with storage..smth like that?

can't say it's really low though..doesn't look this way. they say it's 15, 7 inches high on the website

same height..but no glass-easier to put one's feet up

(even though I have glass coffee table and DS does put his feet up..I try not to say anything lol)

budget'd be helpful to know..since for example I posted not the cheapest pillows, but kinda cheap coffee tables..))

Irl, I hunt coffee tables and side tables on Craigslist. same with lights. is second hand an option?

fabric I usually end up buying new since whatever I really love old costs more than new..

now, frankly I'm dissatisfied with the coffee tables I found since too many legs if one can say so..the problem with chests though-they tend to be higher rather than lower..

here, found this on Wayfair. but-18 inches

check them out though..maybe you'll see something that speaks to you and fits too

now, rug..how high or low traffic you prefer it to be? would you prefer smth like a shag for coziness, or outdoor-indoor as not to worry about spills, or acrilic will do, or you love natural weaves, or wool so you can worry about it less for years to come, or?..

..ok..so I'll shut up for a while, while awaiting your feedback..just to add that I agree(of course!) about art, plants, and metallics

    I think-will be a cool room

Your sofa appears to be a pink beige. I would use creams and blues. I'd stay away from oranges and yellows because of the undertone. Google Maria Killam pink beige and you'll get a ton of info. Also look up on her blog about clean vs. dirty/muted colors.

@april, totally adore that monkey pillow!!

OP, it's not a disaster at all...I would start with a rug....but you need to pick a favorite color...

I think you can squish a TINY chair at an angle facing the sofa on the right..

It IS a small space, but that gives you license to be a little on the wild side with your decor because you're not trying to achieve space at all.

I have the opinion that your sofa is not too large for the room. It is a small room, but you need to fit folks in there, and if you only have a loveseat, how will you lay down on it? So, I like your sofa. I like all the suggestions, but for extra seating, after the chair that others have recommended, for when you have company, I would look into getting a few poufs. You can look for them at Anthropologie or Etsy, and when you have no company, you can just stack them up in a corner somewhere.

    pharmabae thanked Mrs. S

I don't think your sofa is too big either. And I love these posts because very nice people post links to really cool stuff :)

    pharmabae thanked User

yes, I also need my sofas to hold at least my body when in lying position..:)

for side table I'd go with something round to break up the lines a bit..probably metallic..the round takes up more space though.usually..so the dimensions would be helpful

love the suggestion of poufs especially as you're going for a very cozy, homey space, low coffee table, etc

(penny, I love the monkey pillow too..but I know I'm too much into flora and fauna, so I'm a bit scared of my own suggestions..and as you can see I post something and then look at it some more and "eh, no, that's a miss"..lol)) but it helps when all the pics on the same page..at least one can see things together, and vet..

I don't know how to do these..how these are called, when you can sort of put elements together?

runyararochari, don't hesitate to tell folks including me what you think..will help to be more helpful. We see just the part of the room, the floor, the sofa, and know a bit about your vibe and color preferences..you know much more than us about your room and how you imagine it to be, and what you want it to be..

well people have stuff to do..work, sleep..take care of family..who knows what's the time difference too

also, if I meet someone like myself when I'm in this enthusiastic mode-I'd keep my distance lol

we're strangers after all..sometimes a bit overwhelming in the beginning

also. if somebody doesn't answer-doesn't mean he doesn't read. maybe he/she reads. and thinks. and even has the long answer. and even types it. but doesn't post just yet. or intends to post it but never does.

(obviously I'm guessing, and might be wrong. just made me thinking about my DH's mode.. now had to call my sis and apologize for him not replying her text message..because he takes time on putting together a perfect message..while all that was needed "Our pleasure! Come back soon!" The guy is a perfectionist, what can I say..)

but yes, of course feedback is always nice

Not a hit and run--the OP responded to two of my questions about dimensions and preferred colors. It's been less than 24 hours.

    pharmabae thanked cawaps

thank you for all your responses, I'm sorry I went awol had a hecti day at work yesterday so I basically passed out when I got home, oh and the time difference too. My I really apologize for that.

cawaps I definitely love the idea of pink/cream/black, in fact those I was going to go for some pastel pink cushions and a black patterned rug but I would really like for my boyfriend to feel like its his place too so the pink might be a bit too feminine. in response to your other question, I am not based in the US. I am actually in south Africa. However, I appreciate recommendations for items as I could always try and find similar items in stores this side.

aprilneverends, thank you for your comment, Patterns are definitely my jam. I'm a bit of an amateur in the way of patterns but i did a bit of googling and i'd say chevron and greek key are the sort of patterns I am interested in, especially for a rug.

the only item in the room at the moment is the couch and a dark brown wooden bookshelf. Also I am renting at the moment so i won"t be able to paint the walls.

I love the coffee tables, that is exactly what I am looking for I will definitely be on the hunt for similar tables this weekend . Lets just say the budget is not great, this is my first time living alone but I don't mind paying for really good quality stuff. I can also get an item every month :). I love the texture and colours on the last cushion which makes me wonder if a grey shaggy rug could also be an option to consider.

Susan, thank you soo much for your comment. I love shaggy teal rug and I am glad you mentioned cream linen curtains that is what I have at the moment, however I do not have much space for side chairs and I cannot paint since I am renting at the moment.

Okay so I would like to start with a rug and move from there, I love the idea of a beige rug like the one aprilneverends posted but the shaggy darker teal rug also works wonderfully. Which one (dark or light) do you think would be more appropriate? I will definitely be going for a more shaggy cozy texture.

Mrs S and Penny thank you for the suggestions. I don't know if I will be able to put any chairs opposite the couch though because it theres a door on the right, please take a look at the picture below. do you think it would still work?

So to summarize my major issues questions:

    Colour rug?

    Colour cushions?

Can I fit some side chairs into this space? and I would really like to get a tv so where would it go? On the left of the couch is a door to the bedroom.

    thank you again

Oh I'm glad you came back! We get so many great posts that get lots of answers and then tumblewood :(

I love your chairs over there, btw.

You can shop Amazon Global, is that a possiblilty?

Hi Penny, I can shop on Amazon Global but shipping is NOT cheap. i discovered takealot.com recently, is that any good?

I think you can fit a small chair on door side of the room. You'll have to move the sofa down as far as you can.

If you get a coffee table, that's enough for the sofa, so I would get a floor lamp for that side. Possibly a tiny table for the chair...

    A floor plan would help?

teal, (in a rug), you'd have to repeat elsewhere. art, pillows, throws, ceramics, something.

(sometimes a statement can be made with using a color once, but rug is usually too big a surface to do that, or so I think)

beige, you already have..so with beige rug you can stay calmer or explore different colors..including teal too if you like it

so, comes down on how many colors you want..that's something that only you can answer.

some people want just a bit and some people want a lot. and some want to be in the middle.

there's no right and wrong, you can make work almost every idea. you just need to know your idea. and you can add or substract as you go. you'll see by your reaction what works

actually came to show you a small side table..what I like about it it probably can partially slide down the side of the sofa thus taking less space

    https://www.onekingslane.com/p/4404313-calvin-round-side-table-gold-clear.do?sortby=ourPicksAscend&page=3&refType=&from=fn

PS the rugs..you can find one that'll have both beige and teal in it too..)) like, you can restict yourself, or deside not to restrict yourself.

your walls and floor are not going anywhere, they have enough of calmness about them. how much you want to keep that feel, or play with it, or contradict it?

I think that's a great idea to start with rugs and look at clues they give you..your reaction to them

moment, I'll try to find a shag rug I saw recently..maybe I'll be lucky to find it again

    last modified: 9 years ago

great..sold out, some people bought it already( probably bad ones lol)

    pity.

ok, here's another one..less interesting, but see it has your colors already there, and is shag

    https://www.rugsusa.com/rugsusa/rugs/rugs-usa-striped-shaggy/Blue-Multi/200HJZOM1A-P.html

same rug, more gradual..frankly like it more

    https://www.rugsusa.com/rugsusa/rugs/rugs-usa-striped-shaggy/Blue-Multi/200HJZOM1A-P.html

just as an illustration-you can get your pattern from many things

they have pages upon pages of shags there..don't remember greek key, chevron, i probably can find for you. but you get the idea.

    pharmabae thanked aprilneverends

here's chevron number one..they call it "teal " while I see dark navy..:) too stark a contrast -for me. but maybe not for you. contrast is a very personal thing either. took me years upon years to like more contrast..and I'm still miles away from some other people.

I've used Takealot to send things to friends in SA. It's much easier than buying here in the States and then trying to ship and having to deal with customs and shipping. They have a pretty good reputation. Which city are you in? If you're in Jozi, try out some of the 2nd hand/antique shops in Norwood, Olive Grove, or Parktown North. Also, Lifestyle in Randpark Ridge has decor stuff and furniture. If you're in a different city, I'm sure there are equivalent areas.

Block and Chisel? Is that too far?

I have not heard of takealot...so sorry.

I know that when we had frends overseas even to send the smallest item was insanely expensive....like way more for shipping than the item was worth.

widdringtonia above is knows her stuff, clearly...

(I send holiday presents every year

depending on my finances-only to family, or family and friends

it's a pain(needless to say it's not furniture)). it's just my tradition since I remember how happy I was when a package from abroad came when I was a kid..it was excitement regardless what's in the package even(sometimes nothing for me lol). it was special..

so I try to stick to it..

that's the only reason. it's not like they need it...whatever they need they buy themselves send to my address and then I just ship it to them lol

I just want to keep that excitement alive for generations to come:)

    Shipping IS a pain

I'd send out much more if not the shipping)

aprilneverends, thank you, you have given me loads to think about in terms of rug colour options. this is a rug idea i am definitely leaning towards this one:

    https://www.rugsusa.com/rugsusa/rugs/mohawk-home-adobe/Cocoa/2289067886008-P.html.

I must say my biggest challenge I am facing is choosing a specific colour as well as deciding whether to go plain or patterned because I think both would be great. I will have to think hard on this one. but I really wish we could take a vote on it because I suck at these decisions haha.

but this is definitely the rug I have been dreaming of!

    https://www.rugsusa.com/rugsusa/rugs/mohawk-home-adobe/Cocoa/2289067886008-P.html

I love the side table, its stunning but I am vibing Penny's idea for a floor lamp

Penny the floor lamps is a brilliant idea I wish I had thought of that. I think it would also add the modern touch that I am looking for. You guys are awesome!

widdringtonia I am based in jozi and the places you mentioned are exactly in my vicinity so I am really glad you showed up. are there any specific places you might know that I could check out?

http://www.blockandchisel.co.za/ is also in my neighbourhood Penny Whoop whoop! and they have some beautiful pieces too. Are there any specific pieces you would recommend?

Okay so it's bedtime for and you have given me a lot to think on. I appreciate all your advice a task that was feeling like such a huge burden is really becoming great fun. So please keep the comments coming....Yes aprilneverends please keep them coming

Hi there. Just a quick voice of experience regarding a trunk coffee table. If you put anything on the top of it, you have to clear it all off to open it. That's kind of obvious but I stored extra throw blankets in mine and was constantly having to clear it off, it was a pain in the behind! And don't drop the lid on your finger...

kristello great point about that lid:)

just to add that I really like how Jozi sounds. What a cool name for a city. And it's so lucky widdringtonia knows all the where to go. As a somebody who moved plenty of times-yes, first you figure where..takes so long if you don't know where to look

I'm sorry, I can't recommend any specific shops. I've been out of the country for too long. I do hope you find items to match your fun sense of style. One of the best places to look for fabric is the Oriental Plaza in Fordsburg.

The shape of the sofa is lovely. It's a neutral colour as well so that gives you plenty of options to work with. I would start by possibly adding another set of curtains for some colour, a larger area rug, some throw pillows and a table lamp. Afterwards you can also add a coffee table with a center piece.

Here's a little generic floor plan...I had to guess at the door placement from your photos.

I put a console in the far corner, but if you're not ready to buy, I suggest you move your bookcase over there as it will visually free up some space (plus hold your router(?) that I see in the corner.)

For reference, I kept the rug at 5x7 as a larger one would interfere with that side door..

    http://potterybarn.icovia.com/icovia.aspx?projGuid=0DA5BC57-7D0C-4A06-BE37-A505D1A91D09

If you can center the drapes and sofa (while still having enough room for a lamp) then that's great...if not, then that's okay too.
