Those green gold ones have an interesting story. Three years ago I went to visit my sister in Kansas and took her a nice potful. It grew and grew and she dug it up and separated it into a bunch of plants. So, when I went back again this summer she shared these two potfuls from that first plant. Sans must love that Kansas summer heat.

Robin, thanks. Pinguiculas are really interesting, so fierce! I can't imagine any animals wanting to touch or eat them. They grow so slowly! I hope you find one. Sometimes I see them on Ebay.

I think most of us love the trifs the most but I have to admit that some of those others seem so much tougher and stronger than trifs. And the variegates, forget about them due to the outrageous price.

I agree! I'm suspicious of those fancy variegates, chemical treatments are likely.

Don't forget about the radiation. Read about variegated maple trees from Germany that was radiated to produce variegation. Don't know the details but was done back around 1940's. I think it was Caesium-137. We had it at where I used to work to produce gamma rays. Would have done my own experiments but couldn't get to it to use it. Maybe I'm lucky that way.

Are you located in the US? The black gold turns up in home Depot and Lowes fairly often, or I may have some extras next summer. That Penny is a little rascal, always ready to tease.

I have had a number of these plants for about 5 years. You are right though, they love the heat. For the most part they just survive all winter and wait for summer to grow. Growing sans has been a fun hobby for me. I love to walk around and look at them almost every day.

Thank you Debra and Nancy. The wild one is probably a balli of some type. I bought it as balli mini, which it has proved not to be. I like it because it is fairly compact and produces a good amount of branching and offsets. It has taken about five years to reach this size. The points are sharp so I have to be careful to place it where I won't bump into it, pinguicula too!
