the fall crop is produced on the top of the canes, you can prune this out in late winter/early spring and get a summer crop from the remaining 2/3 of the cane which can be pruned to the ground once berries are finished. In the meantime the new canes will grow from the crown which will start fruiting at the end of summer. Some folks prune all canes to the ground every winter and skip the summer crop altogether.

Yup, that would be me. I found it totally confusing with the old cane, last year cane, this year cane, and so on. I decided to cut it all the way to the ground last fall. I was so afraid that they wouldn't come back. Plus I dump a couple of inches of woodchips on the patch in the winter. When the first shoots pushed put from the ground in the spring, I was sooooo relieved. This year's crop is marvelous. Started in later mid to late August and is still going strong now. Quite happy with it.
