Second reaction - what is the name of this plant - did it have a golden variegation when you got it?

Unfortunately Irina, it appears as though your first reaction is the appropriate one. :-( The plant had no variegation. It always makes me sad when I loose a plant.

Just a thought... your plant looks to me like it had a spider not infestation. All the appropriate symptoms including what looks like tiny, tiny webbing in the center of the plant. I'd keep a look out on your other plants and possibly even do a little bit of spraying just in case.

it probably has everything. But if the plant is in a such deplorable shape... we do not want to expose other plants to the infection, plus if by some green magic you would be able to revive it... it would take years...

I understand the desire to save, nurture and heal - it is hardwired into us, women... But at some point - we need to draw the line. Sometimes putting a plant or a critter out of its misery is the thing to do.

That pattern of leaf speckling is highly characteristic of a severe case of spider mite infestation. Look not only for webbing but also for minute dot-like creatures on the undersides of leaves.

I'd toss the plant (it looks beyond hope), sanitize the area it was in (i.e. with soap and water) and prophylactically spray any other house plants in the general area (at the least, with a horticultural soap solution). Spider mites are insidious and can cause serious damage long before you see webbing.

People in the Bay area can grow Streps outside and they do very well in semi-shade. Spider mites, bird droppings and raccoons are part of the back yard growing. I saw quite a collection of streps growing and blooming outside in Pacifica - protected by a low voltage wire - to repel raccoons.
