IMO a DR should be as close as possible to the kitchen, maybe an actual floor plan would help us.

They are both equally distant from Kitchen, it is between the two rooms.. The Family room is currently with the passthru and bar from kitchen the dining room is in the front with two access points from kitchen on each end.

Hi. If you have a less formal dining space in the kitchen itself, I think the room with the fireplace is better suited for a formal dining room.

Then, I'd use the space that has the pass-through from the kitchen, as the family room.

kitchen is quite narrow so that is why we have the breakfast bar, no place for casual seating..I think it is a coin flip

Okay.....I still think the family room is better where it is open to the kitchen. I'd put the dining area in the room with the fireplace.

It would be great if you could eventually open that wall between the fireplace room and the kitchen.

It would be nice to open up but that supports most of the structure plus that would not leave us with kitchen cabinets since that is the only run because the other side is open

Basically you open the front door and the current dining room is there (with the fireplace) and behind it is the kitchen and then the family room

Robyn, I would consider how you function in the spaces.

Most people like the kitchen and family room in one space. It is great for entertaining as well as if there are kids around.

Dining tends to take place in a defined amount of time. So, it is not as important to have the dining room open to the kitchen.

But for some reason you are rethinking this.

If you could tell us more about how you function in the dpaced that would help.
