Sharp's Pygmy

I currently have a Sharp's Pygmy planted in a container. It has struggled this year with early leaf loss and some dieback.

It's been in a container for about 3yrs. During this time I have not refreshed the soil or pruned the roots. I think the watering has been ok because my other container maples are doing ok. I store the tree in a garage during the winter.

I freed up some space in my garden and I thinking of planting into the ground. Should I transplant it now or wait until spring? Should I root prune it or just leave it be? Thanks.
