best dryer to purchase

Paul, I would stay away from LG. I just spent 6 years with one and its performance was disappointing. (my parents have a Maytag Neptune dryer that is at least 12 years old and its performance is infinitely better than the newer LG). I am preparing to buy a Speed Queen-you may want to check out the stats on it, but know they are pricey.

    I have a Neptune that's 17 years old. Not a problem yet.

There was a second Neptune line that was sourced from Samsung, so not all Neptune washers and dryers are the same design. Well, the washers (models MAH6700 and MAH8700 and MAH9700) were from Samsung. Not sure if the matching dryers were also, or if they were the actual Neptune design but with Samsung-style control panels. Anyway, the Neptune line was discontinued shortly after Whirlpool bought the company in 2006, yes? So there are no new Neptune dryers available nowadays.

At Jim LG dryer died after 4 years. Please help me find the Speed Queen you speak of. I would appreciate it.

Go to the Speed Queen website and look under store locator. Do what it ask such as put in your zip code and it usually gives you the names of dealers in your area. Hope this helps.

The Speed Queen web site is not updated very well. When we were in San Antonio two weeks ago we visited a store to look at lights which also carries appliances. Lo and behold I was informed they now carry Speed Queen though they did not yet have a display (this dealer is not listed on SQ's web site locator). So, as you shop for dryers visit some stores that are appliance dealers and ask. It seems people have less trouble with dryers than they do washers. I think the main criterion is capacity and budget when choosing a dryer.

I live near Wash. D.C. I bought an LG washer and dryer 4 years ago. The front loading washer flooded the first time I used it. The dryer died four years later. I also need a refrigerator and I'm again pleading for stories from people who bought washers and dryers and refrigerators for about 6 years. Hearing stories of people who have had their appliances for 30 years or so is talking about manufacturing in the past. Mine were fought over 30 years ago but that's my life now and a lot of these products come from Korea and I wonder if that makes a difference.

Hi Maggie: I too live near DC-in NOVA. For at least two more weeks anyway. I can tell you we replaced all of our Kitchen appliances with mid-level Kenmores May 2016, and that summer my partner's Mom bought Kenmore Elite kitchen appliances. Apparently these are all made by LG.....you really have to do your research to find appliances actually manufactured by the actual brand that is on the front of your appliance.

That is surprising that LG makes Kenmore. I depended on Kenmore as good value. However, my LG washer flooded the place after a day and the dryer drum died 4 years later. I also worry about Shopping at SEARS now as it slowly closes store. What to do.

The first three digits of Kenmore model numbers, before the period, indicates the source manufacturer.
    xxx.xxxxxxxx
    LG laundry typically is 796.
There are online sites that have decoding lists. Search for "kenmore manufacturer codes."
Note that catalog numbers, stock numbers, and numbers online at Sears.com and Kenmore.com usually are not the full model number. Check the model/serial tag ON the appliance.

Hello, that's great info. Thanks, dadoes.

Maggie, all the local Bray and Scarfs seem to carry Speed Queen. Depending on where you are, there should be one near you. I was surprised to see how many dealers in the DC area carry SQ.

    Armjim, thanks for helping out.

Best dryers are basic ones with the fewest bells and whistles. Low,med, high and maybe air fluff. A sensor for energy savings and to avoid overdrying maybe. I love my more expensive front load washer but I will never try to match or waste money on a high end dryer. Completely unnecessary IMO. I prefer hamper doors. My current one is a Kenmore/Whirlpool. Your appliance repair guy will thank you. Basic dryers don't break down very often but if they do they are simple to repair.

I agree with you and that's what I want. Almost made it out the door today....thanks a lot

I did what watchme suggests. I have a basic GE dryer with a Miele washer. It has a sensor, all your basic settings, etc. Bought it 6 yrs ago. No issues.
