The headboard is less than exciting, perhaps a quilted fabric one in a lighter tone. What do you plan to do about window covering? draperies hung above the curved window will control light and add more visual height to the room.

I'd go for a lighter blind, white or close to the wall color, as the brown presses in a bit. I'd get two small prints for over the headboard, hopefully with some of the colors you're going to bring in. Add a blue afghan or throw at the foot of the bed and a good reading lamp (can't see the nightstand in this one photo), which might have some blue as well.

Ensure the closet has good organization and drawers since it appears there is no room for a dresser. Add nightstands with drawers. Add a console and mirror opposite the bed. I agree that a bed with no foot board would give the space more room. An upholstered headboard would feel more cozy too. Drapery panels, with the rod placed high (half way between the ceiling and the top of the window) and the panels siting on the wall on either side of the window will soften the room. If you need the blind for privacy, replace it with a soft cream/white one.

I agree about the footboard. If you can, remove that and the side rails. Also, I would consider hanging (blackout) drapes over the window. The dark blinds cut the window in half and make the room look smaller.

Paint the room sea salt or Quiet moments and give her a lovely chandalier.

Don't know how much from is on the wall not shown in the photo, but if you can add a large chest or dresser I would so she will have somewhere to put her clothes, personal items. I would also remove the dark blind and add a curtain rod over the top of the window long enough to pull draperies all the way out of the window, so they stack on each side. Then buy some
Draperies with a black out liner so she can sleep without light coming in. You can add a wooden blind in the color of window trim to the window like you have it now or either sheer panels in the center on a separate rod so during the day the sheers will allow light into the room, but at night she can draw blackout curtains over the sheers for sleeping & privacy. The bedding in this photo below has a soft look without going too feminine. And looks great with this blue chest by thomasville. Also add a full length mirror to the backside of the closet door for dressing and putting on makeup, with a wardrobe hook above it for her houserobe, ditty bag etc.
if you can find a bedside table that is a small desk that would be nice too.

Looks like a heavy bedframe for that room. Something with a more minimal design will make the room feel more spacious! A really simple bed will then give you more freedom when picking a new side table too.

Can we see some other angles of this room?

It does look like the bed is way too large for the space. I'd sell it and either get her a twin or a double, but not a queen.

A pretty, simple upholstered head board in a nice linen with a tailored bedskirt might work better for her rather than the wood as others have mentioned...

And I would ask her what she likes/ wants...

Maybe you could let her pick the colors and her bedding and then go from there...shop together, either going out or online...

I like the bed in the room -- yes, it's a big large in scale but it reminds me of some beautiful little European rooms I've seen. I think it's the window that changes the whole feel for me from cramped to cosy. I do think it should be the only piece of dark wood there, though.

I'm not saying you need to do it with curtains but I would definitely take advantage of the bed wall and put it in a niche and have storage on either side. Ikea has brilliant stuff for this.

You can't have that many dressers in that small of a room without it feeling cramped.

Maybe a more modern ceiling fixture or fan/light combo....

If you won't use the window often, I would place the bed in front of the window as you will still get a lot of natural light from the top of the window. My thoughts with the bed placed there, are these: Option (adds softness, texture, symmetry) 1) paint the left and right walls white and the closet wall blue (match curtains), dress the window wall with floor to ceiling patterned curtains in a white and blue pattern that will serve only to cover the walls on each side of the windows - this will create texture and make room appear softer, and bring in the color, buy 2 narrow night stand tables to match the wood on your bed and 2 short wide lamps, dress the bed in white with a single blue accent pillow to match the curtains and accent wall. For storage, put a wide, not too deep dresser in bottom of your closet and hang the clothes bar high for clearance. Option 2) (adds glam) paint the entire room any medium to very light blue shade of your choice, skip the window dressings, couple the night stands with 2 matching lamps and place tall mirrors behind the lamps on the wall opposite the entry door place a nice blue artwork of your style choice, dress the bed in white

Include a comfortable chair (and, perhaps, footstool) and some of her favourite art.

It doesn't appear that there is enough room to put the bed on the window wall, to me....

The dark bed frame/headboard will keep the room feeling small and if you are ok with it, I would distress the bed in white, cream or a very soft blue chalk paint (don't have to sand). Your mom will need curtains and I recommend a solid in the same color as the walls so as not to break up the wall (see last picture). Have you considered painting and a light blue, soft bluish/white or cream would be really pretty. Place the side table on the other side of the bed, paint it white, cream or even grey and add a lamp and don't forget a pretty ceiling fixture. On the other side. add a chair or if there is room, a bench at end of the bed...seating will be important. If you have room, a narrow dresser and she may be able to place a tv on it. Keep to a solid comforter and add your color by a coverlet, pillows and art. Show you mom pictures of rooms, so you are sure to capture her likes/dislikes, as white/blue and cream can go in many directions from contemporary to rustic.
